mod_rewrite even when i delete the .htaccess file??

    I've contacted my host [godaddy] multiple times in the past 2 days and they don't know what's going on. Basically what is happening is it is not pulling the variables from www.example.com/project/project-name. However, when I delete all rules except that one, www.example.com/about/ still works. Any idea why this is being so screwy for me?

    Options +Indexes
    Options +FollowSymlinks
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^project/(.*)\$ project.php?name=$1 [L]

    Is what I wrote correct?? Is it some type of hosting problem perhaps?
