Is it possible to test your rewrite on the localhost?

On your own computer, or server? On my dedicated server localhost is exactly what you put for the server name.

Yes, I use XAMP and mod rewrite works fine. I think you may need to enable it in one of the config files.

can you tell me which files?
I've just got XAMPP and was hoping not to need to do any manual configuration.
