Mobile voting

I guess pretty much everyone at DP has a mobile phone or 2 and you probably couldn't live without it, but would you trust it enough to use it on elections?

Estonians could vote by mobile phones for the next Europarliament elections and local government elections in 2009 if MPs adopt respective legislation.

Postimees writes that this would make Estonia the worldâ€™s first country where people are allowed to vote by mobile phone.

The draft legislation that is being promoted by the Reform Party also allows to use electronic ID cards for voting and extends the period for electronic voting from three days to ten days.

Since mobile phones are identifiable it would rule out the situation where people who are not eligible to vote still vote by mobile phone.

Opposition parties such as Centre Party have criticised the Reform Partyâ€™s interest in this project since many Reform Partyâ€™s votes are younger people who are more likely to vote by mobile phones.
