Mobile phone unlocking (UK)

Seems like this is a lot more complicated than it used to be! I remember when you could just google a code and enter it on the handset and it unlocked right away.

I needed both my N95's unlocked. I took them to a local newsagents that had a sign in the window saying "phone unlocking". He took my phones and said come back the next day. When I arrived he said "sorry we cant unlock that phone". Clearly didnt have a clue what he was doing.

Left me in a bit of a situation as I was leaving for Poland again in less than a week - but at this stage I didnt realise how bad it was. Without turning the phone on, I sent them off to King Mobile in London to unlock. The next day I get an email from them asking if someone has tried to unlock it already, apparently the guy had used up all 10 tries and knackered the phone :(

Now I was really struggling to get them done in time. The london mob were amazing, they paid to get a restore file (£10) and managed to unlock my phones and undo all the damage, all at no extra cost to me.

So if you need to unlock your phone I would go with the pro's first time around rather than the amateurs, save yourself alot of hassle!

Just thought I'd write about this since I see quite a lot of phone threads!

And the N95 is still the best phone available on the market, none of this iPhone nonsense

i agree with you on going to pro for servicing. my digital camera was splashed by sea wave when i was in the beach last month. i was travelling to asia. after few drops of salt water, my camera deosnt work anymore. took it to the local camera repair shop, they couldn;t fic the proble after spending the entire day. now i'm back to canada and need to take it to an authorized service center. hope they can fix it and hope no damage was done by the mechanic in asia

£10 seems just right for a phone unlocking. It is a shame that when we own our own phones and pay stupid rental rates on them that we cant all have them unlocked anyway. It should be a right to have that service.

Anyhow, if anyone makes a simple to use unlocking site, there would be a killing to make on it.

Some of the older phones you can get an unlock code online, but all the new complicated ones you need to have done by the pro's.

In France I believe its illegal to sell phones locked to a network, I wish it was like that here!
