Hi, i'm interested in this mmorpg thing. I have a few questions: 1. how much time / day do you have to spend to take care of your mmorpg site? 2. what kind of server does such a script need to work properly? 2. how much money can this system make?
in refference to time.. i spend approximatly 8 hours a day on my games. on the weekends, from the time i get up, til i go to bed. Your players see your dedication, and are more active knowing the owner is as well, there by their side, and there to answer questions or solve issues promptly, but most of all, to just supervise things. Anything can happen at any given time. Even unforseen server crashes that are beyond your control. Somebody has to be there when its back up for the questions your players will ask for reasons of the crash. Owning a game is a full time job. anything less than full time, is half assed.
Awesome post Mr Lestat. You must be a GM or something. OOT: BTW, from a players point of view, here are some things they (and me) would look into when looking for an MMORPG : 1. Server - stable, minimal/no crashes 2. Bandwidth - we'd stop playing 5mins after logged in if it's laggy 3. Frequent patches - for those bugs 4. Support - putting up a forum with no replies from admins or mods for those questions and problems is a dead NO. The rest are graphics quality, effect, ingame functions, PVP and lots more.
Excellent replies from all those above here. I'm going to go a bit more in detail here as I have about 9 years experience building and running online mmorpg gaming sites. It may help those here as well as future mmorpg game owners or those looking to open one. First I want to start off in letting everyone know that what I post here I would not be recommending if it didn't work for me and my clients. So these are proven and working strategy's and things to think about when opening an MMORPG #1 the only thing that matters when someone comes to your site that knows nothing about it is the graphics's. If your site looks like crap you can guarantee you will lose about 70% of your visitors as they see your front site. - Make sure your graphics are unique (as possible) without hot linking to another site. If the site is not visually appealing you will not get repeat traffic, bookmarks, and all the new members that are trafficing your site. #2 Site layout.. Make sure things are found easily. If your potential members can not navigate the site easily without having to think then you will lose on average 30-45% of the new possible members from traffic you are getting. Remember they are visiting your site because they are interested. if they can not find how to login or even sign up you can say good bye. #3 Overall member feedback. If your members are not happy you will not be happy. Make sure to have a forum or area they can talk freely about the site, give suggestions, and report things about the site for you. This is a way to plan out future updates and features they want to have or have changed in certain ways. Lets face it. If they are not happy you are not happy. In that I mean if they are not happy they are not spending money and then you are not making money. #4 Advertisement's I do not recommend advertising on your site until it is large enough where you will actually turn a decent profit from doing so. Members hate advertisements as much as you do when going to a website. OH and ABSOLUTELY no pop unders or pop ups ever. #5 Admin and staff activity. If your staff is not active why are they staff? make sure to plan out a staff committee that is worldwide so that a staff member is online at almost round the clock so that they can be reached in case a member (gamer) needs help or has a question. Also you should be active with your members in forum and site as well show them you care whats going on and make sure your ready to make changes and updates as seen fit to better your site. #6 Advertising your new MMORPG great and most popular way (FREE) is with top game sites such as www.topmorpg.com list your site for free and you get a link code to place in your site. Give your members rewards to vote on each one of these top sites that will move you up in rankings on these top sites gamers come to daily and they will bring new traffic and gamers to your site absolutely for free. I do not recommend adwords and other PPC campaigns less they are strictly towards gaming sites and on other gaming community's. THE BUILD When building a mmorpg make sure to have the entire outline what your wanting the game to perform for your coder so that he or she can code around yoru basic outline and story line. There should be ups and downs and this will help to regulate the community wealth and create a nice playing ground for them to play in and compete. HOSTING I would recommend a mid grade VPS unit to start on so you have ability to restart your box at anytime if it starts hanging up in anyway. Average custom script build starts around 1500+ A great engine (custom build) 5000+ HUGE builds will look around 20,000+ There are premade solutions like I offer as well as custom coding and features upon request.
