MMMM.....resizing image 1400* 502 result big i want thumb size ??

This is driving me crazy, walked away for 2 hours to re-think yet still can not overcome,this basic problem.

Trying to reduce any image to thumb size my instructions are "The best size to use for these thumbnails is 1400x501px." yet whenever I convert an image using both online and image resizer software, the result of the image is hugh.

I did a google image search and placed 1400x501px in the size fieald and the images produced where the size i wanted.

Hopefully with a little help, I can overcome this.

I think an error has crept in somewhere.
1400 x 501 is BIG however you create or resize an image
PC screens used to be 1024 wide x 768 high - and it would more than fill the screen.
You probably want 140 x 50 = 10x smaller?
