Misspelled domains redirect to refer link

I was wondering if anyone here has experience with registering domains that are made up of frequently misspelled domains names.

just a theoretic example would be amazn.com and using a mod_rewrite technic to redirect it to amazon.com with your referral code

I know this is done frequently, but I was hoping someone here could speak on their experience with it. Is the right domain a goldmine or do you need dozens and dozens of domains to even be successful?

Would this be considered blackhat? On one hand its deceptive, but the end result is the web browser gets directed to the web site that they intended to get to.
