Hi everyone, I've created a javascript game which is the same as MS Windows' minesweeper. I've created it just for the fun of it and will not sell it or anything. Actually it is open source, cause everything, except for the scoring system, is written in javascript and anyone can download the source code. I will not sell the game, the only thing that may bring me any earnings are adsense ads on the page where the game is. My question is - can I host it or it is copyrighted by MS and i cannot? Do I need to put a disclaimer or something? Please explain what i can and can't do with this game, cause i've got no idea about it... Any help will be appreciated
I don't see anything wrong with creating a clone since the codes does not get rip off from there. It's just another similar game which uses the same concept. Maybe under the disclaimer, just put something to say it is not in any way associated with minesweeper. Hmm...why not let us have a look on it then?
I'm guessing there are probably thousands of different minesweeper games on the net and yours is another to add to the list. I'm pretty sure Microsoft would not worry about such a small part of what they do. If your game is written uniquely and in no way incorporates any Microsoft, then it'll be fine. Best Wishes, Carl
Thanks for the responses. Well, it's practically finished, but i havent tested it much. It is not uploaded anywhere yet. When i see it's working fine i'll upload it and share it with you I was pretty sure that was the case with minesweeper, but had to ask anyway.. What if i wanna create, let say warcraft browser game. Is it still the same, given i've written the whole thing myself and not used anything that blizzard made (includinj scenario, graphics, etc.) ? Can i still have a similar game named 'warcraft' or not? What if i make a completely different game, i.e. caws and bulls, but i name it warcraft. Can i do that or it is illegal to use the name itself? Copyright is a mystery to me Thanks for your responses
There are explicit copyright terms forbidden the release of any derivative job like could be this case. Your game can easily be based on Microsoft's game but it has to be unique and avoid using similar name or you will be in trouble. More information on copyright can be found through the U.S. Copyright Office, www.copyright.gov
I'm not aware of these copyright legislations on this but 'Warcraft' is a common term. Don't take my word but that might be ok. I'm sure about the minesweeper thought and that'll be ok.
