Did anyone read this about the million dollar homepage? http://www.techweb.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleId=177100325 How do you deal with security issues for your big sites?
That's a shame. Hate to have him blow his money trying to keep the site up for the promised five years. But after a time, his fame will recede into the shadows of internet history, and the DOS goons will move on. In some ways, a DOS attack on you is a sign you've arrived!
don't know about anyone else but it seems really slow for me ow :S but in all honesty take your hat off to the guy (wish it was me)
I feel bad for him. I hope he doesnt have to spend a bunch for security. He was original, he had an idea, he made money. Dont be jealous and try to ruin it.
Someone went through alot of trouble. I'm sure they'll find an inexpensive solution to the DDOS's. There are companies offering protection from such abuses.
that's a good one Acer. Downright nasty if you ask me, shows what a bunch of idiots are out there. funny that it says in that link.. "he may be the target of extortionists, he doesn't know because has 1000's of unopened e-mails" LOL..now that IS a classic.
Who cares? It's his site and now he definately has enough money to put in for proper security. You don't see anyone complaining about Google or Yahoo facing DOS attacks simply because they put in the money for the proper security. Once a site gets so popular, it's only a necessity for major security improvements to be done!! Alex Tew can now definately afford that. NO EXCUSES, NO PITTY.
Apparently the hosting company doesn't mind exploiting the problem to their benefit. They were mentioned no less than five times in the story and their "pro bono" extra effort will bring them lots of free press apparently - hell, it was probably them
I completely agree!!! Who would waste their time with hundreds of thousands of networked malicious trojans to take down.... the milliondollar homepage?! It's probably a publicity stunt. If not, it only helped the site with publicity. Terrorism has that effect. Only strengthens the victim.
Hope he had a "except in cases of denial-of-service attacks" clause in his terms of service for pixel sales!
Bad luck... but did you see? The money he got for his "college education"? he is now taking a break or so it seems :X
Million Dollar Homepage Targeted In Huge Denial-Of-Service Attack January 13, 2006 By Antone Gonsalves, TechWeb News ...more <edit>thread merged</edit>
Sorry to bring this thread up again, I was just wondering about his webhosting - do you think he paid for it, or do you think a webhosting company donated it (in return for a link back from their website)? I was wondering if someone had an idea like he did, would they pay for the hosting and then see if anyone wants to sponsor the site? Or would he just pay for the hosting throughout the project?
Frankly at this stage your last concern is to save on a few bucks by having a hosting company sponsor your site. It's more about reliability and security provided by the host. Plus at a certain point you will probably outgrow the limitation of a shared hosting account and will need to move to a VPS or dedicated. Having a hosting company that works as your partner can be a big plus.
