Migrating a WordPress Blog without CPanel

So I want to upgrade my hosting but the problem is that my current shared hosting plan has CPanel installed and WordPress set-up was a breeze. Unfortunately, the cheap VPS I want to use doesn't include CPanel and I can't afford to pay for it at the moment. How do I move a WordPress blog from a Shared Hosting Account with CPanel to a VPS without CPanel?

Does anyone have a clue how to go about this? :/

    Nick

P.S. My host says they can only help if I have CPanel on the VPS as well which - as I said - I can't afford atm. :(

Generate and download a full backup.

Use ftp to upload the files and phpmyadmin to restore the db.

    Update the wp-config file.

Thanks a lot and that all makes sense but isn't phpmyadmin a cPanel feature? My VPS won't have cPanel :(

Correct me if I'm wrong! :)

    Hello there,

An option would be to use a free control panel on your VPS such as Kloxo or Webmin. This will help you get around, and set your site up. Since you do have a VPS, you will have root access, so importing your database would be a breeze through SSH. cPanel on a VPS license is only $15/month, not sure what your host is charging you for it.

If your current WP doesn't have many plugins etc. you can simply export and xml file and import that on your new installation to migrate all posts.

you can install phpmyadmin first in your vps. after that restore your public_html file and MySQL db from old cpanel, recheck your www directory path and wp-config.php, finished.
