Migrating a site w/o losing placement...

I have a site that has recently started to show up very high in Google searches. Right now the site is a subfolder in another domain. It has reached the point where it is worth putting on its own separate domain.

My question is, what is the best way to transfer all of the pages from the current domain to the new domain? If I transfer, all of the links from external sites will point to the old site?

    What should I do?

Since it's not a normal domain shift, you can't use Google's change of address feature. You can however redirect all your existing pages to the new domain to ensure all the link juice flows (in time) to the new domain. However, there is no guarantee that your site won't loose placement in this process.

This is the reason why I say start with your own domain..it just make things that much hard...you can link back to the new domain..but it an shot in the dark..best to leave it as it is..

    Hi,

In my own experiences, a domain level 301 redirection would be necessary for this migration if you want to maintain the most link juices from the old domain. But, page level deep backlinks would be lost since it is really tedious to setup such redirection.

    all the best,
