In fact, the North Vietnamese General published his memoirs later in which he said he was (paraphrasing here, but I can certainly get the actual quote) that he was suprised at the American withdrawl because they were about to surrender and felt hopeless against the US. He went on to say if it were not for groups like the VVAW (jawn carry's group), they never would have succeeded.

AGS, why don't you call the Supreme Leader of Iran and just ask him politely to release the hostages.

 

If we use the nuclear option, the Communists and Islamists won't have time to undermine the war effort. The war will be over before they can finish painting their "No blood for Limeys" signs.

 

If the regime makes too many of those posters, they will lose face by not executing the hostages.

On the other hand, if they execute the hostages, they lose support from even their most closely affiliated Islamist regimes.

This whole event only makes sense when viewed from the standpoint of internal Iranian political struggles.

It's not a question of hawkish opinion and bollock itching - it's a question of what do we do when all political avenues are expended, as is rapidly becoming the case? We could run backwards and forwards to the UN forever and a day but, as Iran's ignorance and contempt for previous resolutions has demonstrated, it will probably achieve the sum total of sweet FA.

I hope for a diplomatic resolution, but I'm realistic that something a bit harder may be required to ensure Iranian compliance.
