If I ever get through this, I will not: copy google, I will have my own indexing bot.

I think my eyes are bleeding.

Ok so your own search engine. There are freely available php open source scripts you can use, but these will never be able to handle the amount of sites Google can. For something like that you need something entirely different. Unfortunately I don't quite know what that is.

but for something small to medium sized, you can use php and mySQL :)

Serach eninge? What's that? You will be the first one to create that, no need to copy Google.. I bet your serach eninge will be very popular.

More like couple 100 thousand spiders...

You could start out with a couple servers, and continuously move up from there but its going to take you awhile and cost you alot. Algorithm development is crucial and you'll need a SEO specialist to create that for you. That will run you into some financial problems if you dont have atleast a couple grand. Then you could just keep on building off of that search engine. You need to have a great domain name (something people will remember) and again a very, very, very good algorithm. Google has spent millions on their own algorithm and s still changing their algorithm almost weekly.

Making your own search engine is very rewarding but I suggest starting off in a specific niche instead of a general search engine. If you want to start a general one, you should probably think about making something unique- something that people will want to come to your search engine for. Something out of the ordinary.

Just brainstorm and get some funds and take the risk if you want to.

    Thanks
    Mike

Invest mostof the money on the domain if you are programming it yourself. Then invest the rest on advertising. a memorable domain name is key to success.

    Thanks

In addition to what Mike posted, don't reinvent the wheel unless you know something that Google or anyone else doesn't know that will make your engine more popular than google, msn or other.

I definitely agree with Mike on what he had to say. Especially where I highlighted it in blue. That's why I used Google's custom search thing that Google provides for those who want to create a custom search for a specific niche. I'm still working on making mine custom in the management area of my google account. Once I'm done I'll replace the code I have on my site now with the new one. I didn't want a general search engine and definitely didn't want a directory. Have enough of those going around. And I hope you aren't viewing that as "copying" google (I saw your post on my thread and then saw you created your own thread afterwards). I'd hardly call that copying especially if the search is customized for a particular subject/topic/niche. Google's search is general. And quite honestly the internet doesn't need another general search engine whether you make your "own" or not. ChaCha was unique; not sure just how popular it is and if it will ever get any popular than what it is now.

I guess you have something against Google hehe. So if you don't want to use tools provided by Google then there are other resources that maybe someone else on here can lead you to. But actually good luck regardless. Custom search engines is what the internet needs. So go for that. Google makes that easy to do and manage. As suggested by Mike, find a niche and create a search engine around it ..... using Google or not or find a programmer(s) to create a unique engine. I'm sure you can find a programmer on some freelance site like scriptlance.com or something. Whatever you do, IMHO, stay away from general. haha.

All the best to you in your endeavors. :)

    All the best.

If you make your script start by indexing the links I have in my signature and placing them first for the specific keywords.
Anyway, good luck with that but if you want my opinion think twice or more before you start something like this?
A search engine is not something made by one person,2 or 10...
And if you just make something not reliable from the start you will never have the change of modifying the script and making it better. You need it good from the start and also keep in mind that what you want to make, thousands of others thought about it but never tried, maybe there`s a reason in that.
Good luck and if you have results please remember my username and contact me,i will gladly help and support you, but not just now:).

    cheers

    just out of curiosity:
how do you you structure your database, and which system do you wanna use? think mysql is not really made for this amount of data, and you wont get any good results with some basic "where text like '%query%'" commands.
dont think that the mysql fulltext search is the solution to all your problems, and doing a text search via php is quite a pain, even if you dont try anything fancy...
