Yep I have had almost every beta of Vista back to 4074 build. The latest build 5308 is amazing and very nice looking as well. Vista's 3rd party software developer platform is also amazing as well as the Windows API is now in a managed code version (so any .NET Developers here will love that.) We now live in a world of rich internet applications powered by the Windows Presentation Foundation with it's multi-windowed web application power. It's going to be so awesome.

To be honest, my feelings are that Vista is becoming more and more bloated with features and programs and Microsoft forgets what Vista is supposed to be : an operating system.

I would rather have an operating system that I can fine tune and remove unneeded stuff (make it look like a Windows 2000 for example).

Also, I would rather have a Windows Vista that has no trace of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player (I could accept IE and WM as modules that are selected by default, but I'd like to have the option of disabling them), that will not be loaded with DRM that would only hurt honest people..

As it is now, Windows Vista requires 512 MB of memory and a powerfull video card to run as it should run. And this is only for the operating system, a gamer would have to buy another GB of memory to have games running smooth, games that ran absolutely perfect on Windows XP or 2003.

Another thing that I hate is the fact that as soon as a new version appears, Vista, older Windows OS will be considered Obsolete and you won't be able to purchase licenses.

A perfectly functional and good operating system such as Windows 2000 can no longer be bought because MS wants you to buy (imho a worse os,) Windows XP.

I can tell you Microsoft has put a lot of effort into Security in Vista and IE7. Maybe it's too secure now since it ask you for permission for each item to run. What I love most about Vista is really the developer platform it does have because I am too a .NET Developer and I am so geeked about the new developer stuff. The dream of building Windows Look and Feel applications for the web is now a reality.

At some point, Microsoft had to take advantage of today's (and tomorrow's) hardware capabilities. Companies cannot continue to compete if they only make systems that run on old hardware. Web designers at some point decided that they were no longer going to only code web pages that were viewable with 640x480 monitors. At the time, it was painful, but there comes a time when you have to move on. Microsoft is no longer the only game in town, and they have to innovate in order to stay in the game. I applaud their efforts, and I'll gladly pay the price (with new hardware) to keep pace with the times.

Im looking forward to seeing the new vista, I have only seen the previews here but it looks interesting.

Will be good to see how they handle the new dual core processors and if we can expect a significant increase in performance.

    Howdy,

I'm afraid all anyone has said about Vista thus far (within my ear shot) is how pretty Vista is compared to past incarnations. Most members of PC101 have the impression that it's really not worth the dough because it offers little above the current XP version... except that it's prettier and appears to be seeking to capture some the multi-media Mac users.

Help me out here... if you don't fall under the above catagory.. why should I buy Vista???

Kewl, thanks for the article. :) At first blush it appears as though a lot of the improvements are "underground" (read: unseen... e.g. kernel redesign, improved security...) and other features appeal to a minority of users such as gamers.

As one response to the article put it... "As a user, will I notice any differences besides eye candy?" I think this is where the ambivalence towards Vista is coming from. If I can't see the bells and whistles, I'm not going to be all that excited about the product.

This doesn't mean Vista won't be valuable. It just means they need to express more clearly (or loudly) the benefits to the average user.

Vista runs fine on my 2 year old machine.

I would say a machine with 1gb of ram and a decent video card and a good processor is needed. A big hard drive will help as Vista requires like 5gb of space for me.
