Nice post. I have to agree with most. Openoffice is definately a a very good alternative to MSoffice. In some ways I like it better les bugs in some of the applications especailly the excel clone and it also handles files better. That being said I liked XP as it came with my desktop. I am yet to like Vista but hey I had no choice as it came with my laptop. Had it been a choice I would of went with XP. The deciding factor was the 2 gig of ram free and believe me Vista loves ram.
Oh and Vista seems to be loving graphic cards, too. Bear checking this thread to see what I mean.. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=286677&highlight=vista Love kills.
Bruce Schneier wrote an interesting article on DRM and some of the drawbacks of Vista. I'll be sticking with XP for now.
I've a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. It just seems that Vista is a heavily modded & themed version of Windows XP, nothing more nothing less.
My laptop came with Vista Home Premium, but I quickly upgraded to Ubuntu with Berl as it totally kicks Vista's butt.
Ok play nice My system came with vista so I was trying to save face but believe me it xp was an option I would have taken it. I would have even considered 98.
Is there a good Dreamweaver/frontpage equivalent piece of software for Linux? I dual boot between Debian and Windows, but I have been itching to try Ubuntu (probably should have tried it like a year and half ago, but never got around to it.)
Quanta and Kompozer are two good WYSIWYG editors for linux. Also, if you're doing web design in Linux and you need to test your site in IE, there's a very easy way to get IE running in linux. That way, you don't need to reboot to windows just to see your page in IE. http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page
I am still on XP. I tried installing vista, but it is saying I have one non conversant driver and also my nero is old and it cannot be used in Vista. So I planned to stay with XP.
I have a copy of vista but have not installed as I haven't purchased the final licence key yet with their new licencing approach. Sound like I should consider Linux instead. How easy is it to migrate to Linus when everything I have is windows based ie documents Can I leave XP live for any I cant transfer over?
Too big of a change this Vista looks to be. If you don't have much time to spare on the upgrade, and if your computer is aged, consider a hold on before switching away from the XP.
Thanks, yea that IE thing is much easier than wine. I remember running it once using wine and I did a Windows update just to see what it would do, and it thought I had Windows 98, and then it thought it was actually sending me updates and then said "updates are complete"
Funny I'm trying to learn one now. It's NVU, opensource and FREE. Originally made for Linux and ported to Windows. Here ==> sorry no links allowed for me yet. NVU.com
May be your laptop needs upgradation. Check how much RAM, hard drive space you have and what is your processor speed. Also check for Video RAM since Vista takes more Video ram than XP. But altogether, I am happy with XP and no intention of moving to Vista in Near Future. It still says my Sony Vaio laptops, pointing device, dvd driver audio driver needs upgradation.
