SEATTLE, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) announced plans on Thursday to open its own chain of stores and hired a DreamWorks Animation (DWA.N) executive to run them.

The move follows rival Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) successful foray into retailing, but comes at a time when consumer spending is under pressure due to the recession.

The company did not say how many stores it was looking to open, or when, or which products would be available.

That is to be decided by David Porter, a former DreamWorks executive, which Microsoft named as its new vice president of retail stores on Thursday. (Reporting by Bill Rigby; editing by Carol Bishopric)

I think the reatilers where good enough, the original store will have a great hassle on them to provide extra support to the customers.. :D

The economic climate is challenging, so it should be interesting to see how it all works out.

Blindly following what others did is a bad idea... :(

Microsoft needs to be innovative and think out of the box to shake off the competition and kick jump its sluggiish sales.
May be, offering a free hardware with their overpriced software would not be a bad idea..after all !! ;)

Microsoft should only focus on doing what it does best. Diverting its attention to other ventures may hurt the core business of their products.
