looks like M.S. is planning to get people hooked on to M.S products right from the start of their coding days source not sure if India is included, but if it is not then I guess it will do so in some time
Smart move on Microsoft side, once you get a programmer trained in their languages, it would be naturally for the programmer to use Microsoft when they are out in their working life......
I have No idea about the actual source I have mentioned the source based on which I have posted it here.
Visual studios is ALREADY Free! You can download express versions for visual basics and visual web developer,,c# etc from msdn site.
Certainly a smart move , ive seen microsoft giving low price product to students but this will increase their profits much more. And a an increase in potential clients. Ace.
This is called Microsoft DreamSpark and the website can be found here. You get to download Visual Studio 2008 Pro, Microsoft Express Studio, Windows Server 2003 Standard and XNA Game Studio. Of course you need to be from United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland or Belgium. It's a cool move by Microsoft.
Why Stanford University? They all got money, they can afford it. Go to east LA and do your speech there bill.
yeah MS is working on this move since many days I recieved MS .Net 2005 trial version DVD from MS for FREE in INDIA. I also recieved many DVDs and CDs from them if any buddy needs them i can give the Link to order those free DVDs just PM me
I am a student of computer engineering and we have the Scullery free, the majority of programs of Microsoft, less the Office.

More countries will be added to the list throughout the year. In order to get this software from Microsoft at no charge, you will be asked to establish or verify your student status once every 12 months. This process is built into the DreamSpark site itself. Verification of valid student status will enable students from around the globe to download Microsoft developer and design tools at no charge. Note: You must be at least 18 years old or have otherwise reached the age of majority in the place (province, state or country) where you live, or if not, your parent or legal guardian must accept the Microsoft DreamSpark software license terms on your behalf, in order for you to download and use the software.
But.. They are always after money. It's the sole reason the corporation exists, to perpetuate it's own wealth. This sort of stunt is purely to get people trained, academically, on their own software and development tools which will by and large be supported only by MS. That may not seem too bad, you might think. But the more MS can infect the schooling system's programs to drop the more easily adapted languages in favor of MS only programs... The more likely you won't find a credits on someone's diploma signifying skill in anything else. Not that it even matters anyway. The only people that care about what a piece of paper thinks of your skill are the ignorant. I'm sure anyone here looking to hire a programmer would check out their work and references.
sigh, apple made its dev tools (xcode is the best tool I have seen so far, from any company) available free for everybody. As usual, m$ is trying to catch up.
I got negative reps for posting this information. Reason given that copied from somewhere I have already mentioned the source in the post. I am really disappointing with the behavior of DP community members.
Microsoft has a very creative and interesting marketing strategy. Do you know its secret? I don't think you do, most people don't. Their strategy is the best way to come on top, it is : Act good and kill competition Now they will give free editions of Visual Studio, programmers will make more softwares which run on Windows and thus people will have to keep Windows as their main operating system. Sales will also stay steady or it may rise. In what way is XP better than Linux? Still it rules the market.
