Microsoft is probably interested in all the R&D which is going on at Yahoo, there are some things that yahoo are actually out in front with. The other reasons they are going after them is to get yahoo's ad network, so they can compete with adwords/adsense.

I suspect they will come out with some kind of rebranding, like "Yahoo - Ultra" and launch a msn/yahoo search hybrid.

oh, I think yahoo messenger will go, and just be absorbed into msn messenger.

Google's bad days will start after the takeover of Yahoo. Microsoft will eat up Google, first thing they will block is merger of Doubleclick and Google. Microsoft has lot of money, they will do amazing marketing and do something amazing.

as long as Yahoo and Microsoft's search engines are still crap, they won't beat Google. I see that Microsoft and Yahoo algorithms are much simpler than Google. I ever searched for a health medicine in Yahoo but the first position there is a sux website, it's only one page and full of affiliate links. Wow, there must be something wrong with Yahoo, I thought at that time..Yahoo and Microsoft will only beat Google if they know how to get the proper result in their algorithms. Otherwise, they won't ever beat Google.

Microsoft has the money, yahoo has the talent and buy combining them together they should be able to get better search results then they should do on their own and have a chance at getting some market share from google that's the theory behind the merger.

I tend to agree with snowbird on this. And I hope Yahoo refuses this deal.

For some reason, I do not see that MS has much interest in revamping YPN or other ad network.. for small publishers. Because natively, MS is a software giant, not an advertiser marketer.. They could care less about the free independent Webmasters world, or open source software for that mater.. They more just want "All Your Base" and if this happened, it could very well be just another step to gain it!

Would be nice to have Yahoo and MSN messenger merged. I can't really see the benefits to MS from this buyout.

From a financial point of view, Yahoo only has a few other options besides this. I'd be deeply surprised if they rejected the offer.

Sure, Microsoft does software. Sony is natively a radio and tape recorder maker. I'll agree, they want to control everything. Is Google any better though? Microsoft has a vested interest in opening a publisher program, since that opens the doors to new inventory. Microsoft will also own the Right Media Exchange, which does more than 2 billion impressions a day, 300 million from small and medium sized publishers.

AdECN also has many small and medium publishers.

They may not care for open source, but here I see it as the lesser of two evils.

Actually Microsoft is probably doing this because of Google's buyout of Doubleclick (talking about creating an online monopoly - this one certainly is, advertising wise, ie)

Please enlighten me as to what other inventory this will open the doors to?

It may generate some case flow and start new markets, yes! But to whose benefits are those markets? Like do you mean something like this: MS will start an ad network and than create the only software that can be used to operate on that ad network and than the publisher would be forced to pay for that software.

LMAO.. This is precisely my point in the overbearing power control this would just add to the giant..

I think the merger will finally give Google serious competition, and competitions can only mean a good thing for publishers.

I think Google is not that kinda player who will be mocked down by the threat but they will now come out stronger and face this competition as an opportunity for them to come even stronger. It has been long time since someone had come up to Google standards. All optimisers it is a good news to all of us as now we have another marketing platform much stronger now. It is just to be seen what kinda strategy they come up with to beat the big 'G'
