And considering microsoft offer no real service, what do they offer apart from a shitty pre-installed operating system, some outdated news BBC offer 100 times more but better and a ppc application that gets next to no clicks, see ya Mr Gates, so happy Yahoo never sold to you.

Without Microsoft I doubt you'd be posting this message right now. They're a big reason why everyone has a home computer now.

It's also amusing people bad mouthing Microsoft for going after these stores. These stores are selling illegal copies and they've all been warned many times about it. I'm sure if you developed some software it cost you $10,000 to make then sold one copy here for $300 then that person just posted a link to the installer for everyone else you'd be pretty pissed.

Without ms I wouldn't be posting this message right now?, how do you figure that out? Just because they are a big name company, who cares, ebay are another big name company and I feel no value in using any of there services either. There is not one thing ms have that I use. As for piracy, yeah thats wrong, but not everyone can afford the ridiculous price for something that is rigged with bugs anyway.

All DIY computer stores and local brands shops do this in China, sometimes meters away from branded computers stores (HP, Toshiba, Asus etc.) that come with legitimate Windows license.

I've heard the argument that if people paid for software rather than pirating it then the software would be cheaper as the developers could get their money back quicker.

I seriously doubt this would be the case as they want as much profit as possible but it's a nice thought.

I'm sure people who are disagreeing with Microsofts' actions are the same people who live in countries were piracy is very large. OR....they at least have some other sort of pirated program on their computer.

I back up Microsoft 100% for this. They should be going after this small company even if Microsoft get's nothing out of it, even if they loose money on this endeavor it's still a good thing. Piracy is costing companies billions every year.

They are the reason there is a simple to use operating system for the common person.

As it stands there are two alternatives to windows. You have your MAC and your *nix based machine. With the linux based systems it's by no means a walk in the park to setup even with an easy to use competitor near by. It would be scary to think what sort of usability they'd have if there wasn't a windows machine that could do something very easily.

Well the store isn't just ripping off Microsoft - what about the poor customer that bought these computers and now find that maybe they can't get updates because they have an illegal copy of Windows or Office?

Not a big fan of Microsoft but they did the right thing here.

If a shop of all places is stupid enough to sell pirated software they deserve this law suite. They are obviously going to get caught if its in a shop!

Yeap it is suppose to be, sue a few of these pirates to scare the rest of the pirates into standing inline. Useful tactics.

I'm sure a majority of the pirated software is being distributed by the little guys. In other words, somebody who is doing this out of their bedroom.

I hope they get enough money to close down those stores for good. My best friend was sold a computer with a copy of an XP and when I tried to update to the new service pack I was shown and error stating the version is already registered or something like that.
I also reinstalled the XP for her, which by the way was nothing more than a backup. They labeled the CD as 'WINDOWS XP Full Version'.

I had a Sun box 10 years ago. I had to hunt for an AMD processor. A cheap pre-built was better than my box, because of the internet. My ISP didn't understand Unix-speak. My ISP barely speaks Windows.

I have a Windows box, because that's what providers speak. The Internet originally spoke DOS and Unix. It was alive and well, long before this guy learned how to type.

Actually, OEM software does require activation. Corporate versions with a Volume User License don't require activation. ;)

For users who didnot know they had illegal copies installed by the vendor, They can call up Microsoft's Customer Support and verify it. After verifying, Microsoft offers the users (Microsoft considers these users Victims of Piracy) nice discounted prices on the same OS or Newers Version and sometimes a free copy of the OS. I can confirm this fact 100% since my friend works in that department. Microsoft's Customer support is one of the best in the industry and they are very keen on customer satisfaction.

P.S > I am not a Microsoft fanboy (i hate IE7). But i like some of the ways in which Microsoft handles it's business. I also hate it when people badmouth some big companies and support the underdog because they think it's "hip" & "cool" and because many people are doing it.
