But I do not think Microsoft Security Essentials has a firewall option, right?

That is the only thing deterring me to move to M S E.

IMHO, AVG deserves the first place in downloads.

Yes ofc, MSE updates itself. Im sure the problem is not only with MSE..
But, you could be correct here as you have experienced it.
    What is your OS?Total RAM?
There could be many factor out there that's decreasing your PC's performance.

MSE utilizes Windows Firewall, and Windows Defender as far as i know of.

MSE is quite new in this game, and im sure it will improve rapidly to compete with major antiviruses. There is no way to compare it with others right now. :) Im sure you understand.;)

Yes, in accordance with no. of downloads AVG beats all. But, do people just download anti-virus because of no. of downloads?

of course, RAM, CPU and OS(XP) are factors, but the point is with the MSE installed, the machine runs considerably slower than with AVG...
its a very good indicator for software quality... i think....

My brother's system hung with a virus. He was using AVG. I'm not blaming AVG cause I'm sure he did something wrong and I also respect AVG. Today, I'm formatting/reinstalling XP for him. I installed MSE. Took about 3 minutes plus downloading.

There seems to be some praise leaning towards mse. I am usually reluctant when it comes to most things microsoft. However, free is a good price and if they do provide fast regular updates I would think about it. Next time I put together a machine or mess with some of my older boxes after reading this thread I am really thinking about trying it.

One of the selling points of MSE is that it doesn't do that and I've noticed that to be true.
    Absolutely false!

I'm happy you are actually positive about MSE :)

Wow, good to hear that, Im using win 7 too, and MSE is a perfect match.

That was outstanding, as most antivirus can't beat that 3 minutes for downloading+installing.

Thanks for your comment. It's really good to hear positive comments, as i also have starting to like MSE.

Another happy user, im glad its working for you. :)

I really recommend MSE. I just installed it with my copy of Windows 7 and haven't really thought about viruses since. During the XP/Vista days I used to hunt around for the best security solution.

Also, The idiots who are using the number of CNET downloads to see which is "the best" -facepalm-.

If you guys want to know about how good these modern day antivirus programs are against viruses, try going for something unbiased like virusbulletin or http://www.av-comparatives.org/

places where people do proper tests and stop looking for which program was downloaded higher :p

Ok I use ESET smart security right now, but I am thinking of changing it.

I need to decide between Avast Free Antivirus, Avira AntiVir Personal and Microsoft Security Essentials.

I need the one which uses the least ram, and which does not slow the pc down. In other words, I need the one which is the fastest out of these three.

    Please give your honest recommendation.

    Thanks,
    Nabeel

Could you please tell why you still prefer eset smart security?

As I also use eset smart security, but I am thinking of using MSE now, after reading this thread. Please do reply.

I am not sure, I mean I am a bit wary of freeware software and that too an antivirus software.
Most times they open your computer to further virus threats and you end up reformatting your machine 6 months down the line.
Perhaps you have a nice option out there but I cannot risk trying it out. Would look out for other user reviews instead.

Hey nab, I also used to use ESET. I think you'll love MSE because it is faster and more integrated into Windows. Also it has lower false positives and a better detection rate on both OnDemand and ProActive scanning :).
