Microsoft Recorded TV Show Problems

My roommate recently recorded the first 4 episodes of 24 for me...using his fancy windows media center PC. In any event, he just put them on his shared drive and I grabbed them up, thinking windows media player would play them fine...
    No dice.
So I downloaded the newest media player, and it seemed to be able to play the files, but they took away my ability to fast forward, and I'll be damned if I'm to watch commercials! :)
Anybody know of other programs that will read this file type? I've tried a few (BS Player, Media Player Classic to name a few..), or of some way of converting the files to something a little more...normal? Like .avi or divx or something?
    Thanks.

    What about "Media Player Classic"?
