And I'm talking that we are part of Apple, they share with us their global and regional reports.

Microsoft don't providing because Microsoft don't produce "all in one" computers as Apple do.

Desktop computers (official sets) comes with 1 year shop guarantee + individual guaranties (2+ years) for all the components.

As for folding desktops they comes with guarantee on single elements and it's different for each element but mostly 3 years. Only refurbished products have half of it, and second hand products (after guarantee) got 3-6 months shop guarantee. I never come in to companies like Intel or AMD gave different guarantee for different regions. I imported some PC parts directly from USA and other EU countries and guarantee was the same as on my local market.

Notebooks comes with 1-3 years guarantee depend from brand for ex.: Fujitsu - 3 years; Asus, Toshiba, Acer, MSI, Samsung, Sony - 2 years; HP, Lenovo - 1 year. Some of those companies (like Acer) gave 2 years guarantee for individuals and just 1 year for companies. It have some explanation in fact that companies harder exploit their equipment. Usually they are taking all in leasing than when guarantee is finishing they exchange it on new one. I don't know why you got just 1 year guarantee on Dell - Dell comes with 2 years guarantee.

Yes, it's available by couple of years but it doesn't change the fact that you cannot do everything this way. You are talking about really up to date versions of Linux and I have in mind also past versions of various distributions.

Yes, that's the point and this point apply to most of people which would use Linux if there would be a better software for their needs. It's not only about graphic, games or advanced text editors. People don't use os which doesn't guarantee them the best possible software. It would be stupid force yourself to use worse software at one system if you can have better software at other system. That's the point - other systems for other needs. I'm using simultaneously 3 systems, every for other needs. Using of 2 systems is very common and I don't understand why someone trying to stuck by 1 system (not count if one system fulfill all personal needs).

He is a graphic/photographer and he's using PS, Illustrator, Corel, some advanced RAW editing tools and QuarkXPress. Gimp is good for needs of regular users however IMO they can find better software at Windows and Mac OS, which is more intuitive and faster in use.

That's true, they just used to Windows maintenance and they're searching for similarities. The other true is that Linux is on the way to be for them as Windows. Even Linux producers with every new version release point that they just added another function which work/is similar to something in Windows. Do you think it's a good way?

It doesn't sound like it and, again, it doesn't matter what your store is doing. Yes, your sales are included in the totals I mentioned but it doesn't change the fact that Apple had a record year and Microsoft had a down quarter
Exactly. Apple will support your hardware and software. Microsoft does not. You pay for that support.
    Such as what?
But Ubuntu updates itself continuously. You click a button at the top when you get notified of updates and you are up to date.
If you want to talk about paid software, I can show you animation and film software that spits in Windows face. Emacs runs rings around Visual Studio. And if you have to bring up games, get an XBox.
I pretty much only use FreeBSD, and have not used Windows in 3 years. The only reason I use Ubuntu is because my web host uses Linux and I have to compile on a Linux system for ABI. I would have used Centos, cause that's what they use, but I wanted to try Ubuntu and just never switched. I still may.
I think I said this earlier. Professionals always gravitate toward *nix. It will always be far more flexible and cheaper than Windows. If you ignore the average user, where do you see all the work done? It's almost always on *nix. Quark came from Unix. The internet runs on Unix. On and on and I really have grown tired of these long threads. :)

Some time ago it was necessary to install some components by compile.

I didn't said that only paid software is good. I just said that also Windows have some free software which is good quality and users should choice what's the best for them. For example VirtualDUB is far better tool for edition and conversion of movies than many from similar paid software. Games are popular entertainment for many ppls but there's nothing bad in playing games at pc. IMO it's better than sitting with console at front of 50+'' LCD TV. Besides many ppls searching for possibility to play together in network.

I had time between 2003-2005 to use almost only Linux but later I back to Wind.

Just look at one small thing - Linux/Unix home users are often not "professionals" but just amateurs which forcing theirselve to use Linux just to act expert and swank by friends (something like "everyone who using Linux is a professional").

    :)

OMG, I think most Windows user don't know what they are saying about *nix!

I have been using Windows for more than 15 years. I switched to Unix several years ago. But now, I am using ubuntu.

I think ubuntu is one of the best OS out there for novice and expert. Command lines are stuff of the past decade. I still like using it though!

As I mentioned before I am a system admin/web developer. I found lot more useful tools on Linux than Windows. Using Linux, my work is much more productive. In fact, all my employees are using ubuntu for web development and graphics design. Simply because it's free, secure, reliable and fast!

I think the reason Windows user found Linux hard because they have been using Windows for years. Many of them properly spend more time with Windows than their partners. That's why they found Windows easy in every aspect.

If they spend the same amount of time with Linux. They will start thinking differently. I believe most people only try Linux for a few days, they hit some obstacles then return to their comfort zone. Those overcome the obstacles would likely to stay with Linux.

I went to Thailand last year, the roads & bridges in Bangkok like mazes. It's very hard for me to get from A to B, even though it's only a few kms apart. But if you drop me Australia, I can go almost anywhere with ease. I believe the road navigation system in Australia is much better than Thailand. But Thais wouldn't think the same unless they leave their comfort zone! They have to start living in Australia for a few years to realize it! If you stick Linux for a while, you will appreciate it!

I heard people here saying *nix softwares are poor in quality. I don't see any super computer running on Windows. In my experience, most of the softwares I used on Linux are less likely to crash than the softwares I used on Windows. I haven't reboot my laptop for 2 weeks! I cannot do the same with Windows because they have very poor memory management system.

You could find more useful tools because of your profession but what about regular users which aren't computer professionals? You don't need secure and reliable system to work at graphic, also it's fast and can be free at Windows as well. Linux isn't secure itself, it have gaps in security as Windows do. If you know what you do you can secure Windows on similar level - if someone state that good security is possible only at Linux it means he don't know how to do it at Wind. That's the reason why some ppls use Linux, just because they think it's safer but the only SAFE computer is the one disconnected from web ;)

They won't change their mind if they won't find at Linux things which they liked in their previous system. There's nothing wrong in back to "comfort zone" - using of computer should be easy and should be a pleasure, so if peoples feel that Windows gave them those values than in point of fact IT GAVE.

This comparison is not appropriate. It's natural that you may feel lost in your new environment. You have to learn differences and accept them or not. More accurate would be compare it to someone who's moving from village to big city or inversely. If he likes new big town and see there more possibilities to himself - he'll stay there, but if he won't feel comfortable with loud noises and car exhaust than he'll back to his village.

Show me those "super computers" running on Linux but don't tell me about servers of big corporations. My Windows is running 24/7 and I rare notice any problems which would demand reset. I think it's a little bit as anticipation of many peoples to Win Vista. They didn't like it just because they didn't know how to turn off some functions and make it looks like Win XP. It means that people wants something simple what they know very well and they are too lazy to learn new things. It apply not only to try new systems but also to use new features in their actual systems.

Linux is very good, I'm not going to debate that, but I'd prefer to have Windows XP on my notebook, mainly because I prefer to use Windows XP when traveling around, I'm not too aware why, but I just find it easier.

The free tools on Windows are child's toys compared to the ones on *nix. Emacs is free and better than Visual Studio which is not. Apache is free and better and more used than Windows servers which are not. Etc.
If you are connected to the internet and on Windows you are not secure, period.
Absolutely false! Windows is multi-x times more insecure than any other operating system. Known, proven and verifiable.
The only thing you can do with Windows is cover up the vulnerabilities. In *nix, the same vulnerabilities don't exist. You are showing what I expected, LaFonda. You don't know what you're talking about. You are a salesman and with little technical knowledge other than what you read in magazines.
Of course you are ignoring the fact that the same things ARE available. You are reinforcing my previous point that Windows is for amateurs and hobbyists but *nix and Macs are for professionals. That's why games are not so highly desired on *nix. Those are kids toys. We are doing real work on *nix.

I would like to see some data showing Microsoft loosing ground. Apple's market share decreased 2% last quater (check Engadget). Microsoft's increased. 95% of netbooks currently run Window's XP and the sales of PC's and laptops running Vista is doing better then ever even though people hate the crap out of it.

Declined 2% from the previous quarter which was the highest in Apple's sales ever. We're talking sales, not market share. Apple's market share has been increasing.
Sales of Windows[/quote] decreased by 16%.
Absolutely false. Netbook sales with Windows are less than 2/3 and Microsoft does not make much off those sales.
As I said above and in another thread. Microsoft, themselves, stated sales of Windows was down the last two quarters and will continue to decline throughout the year.

That's from Microsoft's quarterly financial report sent to the government and stock holders yesterday. Do you have a better source?

That is just one source. Of course you have a bunch of haters (like yoruself) who think Microsoft is about to tip over and die.

Truth of the matter is, with Microsoft licensing Window's XP for computers in developing countries, it creates an appitite for more Microsoft (hello Window's 7).

So you can provide only one source but I have to provide more? Tell you what. you provide more than one source that says 95% Windows on Netbooks and I'll provide you more that says it's not.

Take a look at this Operating System statistics provided by w3school:
    http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

Linux and Mac has been increasing 100~200% during the last several years.

Windows family is counts for about 90%. There is no way the market share for Windows XP alone on Laptop can reach 95%. Be reasonable man!

Wow, worldman. Microsoft says they run 96% of netbooks. And Acer and Toshiba, who only sell Windows netbooks, say it's 90%. Gosh. Gotta believe them. I mean, Microsoft wouldn't lie, would they?
