Can't wait to try an iPad. I was suitably impressed with the iPhone and I use it every day. However it is impossible to find a reasonable commentary on it cause every one are either Microsoft or Apple fanboys, or go by the logic "If it's not Microsoft it's good". It dooes really seem to be an oversized iPod touch. Which I've discovered one use for - my grandmother. She's somewhat blind and can't see the small screen of an iPod or netbook and can't do anything more on a computer than type (forget mouse movement). So that's where the pad has an advantage, she can use it to check emails easily, without having to navigate to a webmail she can see the screen and she's expressed interest in using it for downloading books.
In all honesty, we are not far from sharing this opinion. This is, without the slightest doubt, one of the things that makes that the iPad like a large iPod Touch rather than reduced version of a mac.
