Vista is the new ME, a big failure on microsofts part and a couple years from now people aren't even going to know about but rather there going to be using the new os release.

Why do you think Vista is a failure? It's unstable? No. It's incompatible (with newer drivers/software)? No. It's unsecure? No. It runs slower than XP? Yes, sometimes, because it's made for newer computers. It's easy and intuitive? Yes. It's cooler than XP? Yes.
Then what's the problem with it?

Personally I think it need more time and a few major service pack updates. Its also a hudge memory hog. Once those things are overcomed it will be great. Or once Windows VistaSE comes out.

I agree 1000% with this. Seems with MS you have to skip a generation to get a good OS. ME was the worst ever hands down but Vista is not complete software. I will bet the next generation will be awesome and replace XP.

I have Mixed feelings about MS...the operating systems are just...meh - an OS is an OS. I am comfortable using Win98,XP, Vista or any Linux distro.

Their development products (Visual C#,Visual Basic, Visual C++) are great, as is MS Office - both 2003 and 2007. Visio is also a great program for cheating in Graphics class (screw you AutoCAD, I ain't drawing my own toilet)

My only beef is their web development stuff - Internet Explorer and FrontPage/WebExpression. Idiots are always gonna use Web Expression/Expression Web, whatever its called, and same with IE - so I have low expectations of IE8, so that when it arrives, it'll blow me away with its new rendering engine and CSS support.

If you don't like Vista, don't use it. Microsoft has yet to force users to use Vista. I'm sure this will change eventually (even now, more applications are 'requiring' Vista).

Most major manufacturers still offer XP as an option. Vista is the default, because it is new. People want to buy 'future-proof' products where possible, so knowing that they won't need to replace their OS in the near future is a selling point.

This is really not so different from how most Google-operated services use a Google ID. Yet few (if any) people complain about that.

As a publicly-traded corporation, they can't very well give up and not try. How would shareholders react? This is simply business, whether effective or not. The fact that they are holding onto a segment of the market indicates that is at least somewhat successful, even if they didn't happen to reach you.

I'm no Microsoft fan, but I don't think it's fair to state that their business decisions are poor because they don't appeal to you. Consider their growth and the competition they face, and note how they are still profitable.

Someone seems to be making at least a few good calls.

Get in line and take a number ... at any given time, MS has dozens, if not hundreds of lawsuits pending. It's one of the reasons Vista sux so bad, it's being designed by lawyers.

Remember when the Federal court ruled that MS was a defacto monopoly and threatend to break it up? Never happened. If the Feds can't do it ... well, you can keep trying I guess ...
