Help, I bought a computer, second hand about three years ago. I have just got a message from Microsoft saying I have to register it. When I tried to register the numbers they are saying they are the wrong numbers. So I can assume the guy I bought the computer off has used the same operating system on other computers.
How do I solve this problem and how much will it cost me.
    Thanks

more than likely its a pirated license key. Is there a sticker on the bottom of it that displays the license number for the Operating System? What Operating System?

I assume its a pirate version. I phoned the guy I bought it off and he dose not want to know.
    Its XP package.
How do I go about getting the computer back up and running as the numbers Microsoft have giving me are all automated I am talking to a recording.
How much will it cost me. Am I better off buying a new computer.
Any help would be great thanks.

You don't need to buy new computer for that. Just buy a new legitimate copy of your Windows XP.

By the looks of it, I would be as well off to purchase a new lap top. I can not see XP for sale for cheap price, if you know any place, please let me know.

If you have the budget, just go on with purchasing a new laptop. Otherwise, you can take a look at Ebay for cheap Windows XP copy.

The price of laptops has really fallen in the past year. It may well be better value just to buy a new one. I live in Ireland and several online stores have nice laptops for 399 euro with vista premium. I see on microsofts website vista premium alone is 170 pounds sterling about 190 euro.

Also, if you use your laptop mainly for web surfing, you'd be fine with linux for free

If the laptop harware is good (use your built-in BIOS diag test) and is testing fine and nothing appears to be visually damaged, I would get an OEM copy.

Its likely in a recent windows update you downloaded Windows Checker Tool.

Microsoft introduced it a while ago and it verifies your copy of windows. Try look in add/remove programs and un-install it. Then make sure you dont re-download it. Thats what i do.
