A recently-release roadmap for the next major Window release – Windows 7 – indicates that Microsoft is planning to release the new operating system in the second half of 2009, rather than the anticipated release date of some time in 2010. There are apparently three “milestone†builds planned for 2008, and the first one – M1 – has already shipped to key partners for code validation. M1 is for the English language build only, but is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will most likely be the last Windows operating system available in 32-bit, and given the rapid advances Windows Vista is making in the 64-bit computing market, this seems a sensible decision. Well, it seems that Microsoft is admitting (in very oblique way) that Vista was a mistake and they are starting to focus on Windows 7 year earlier. There are two possible scenarios: 1) It is well known that MS supports current and minus one generation of Windows. Question is: Will they support Vista after Windows 7 is released or not? IMHO, Vista will end up abandonded as lame duck (similar to ME). MS will probably move to Vienna and they will support it plus they will support XP (notice that Vista is -1 generation but as it will be abandoned similar to ME MS will probably keep their support for XP - SP3 indicates this too). Notice also that Vista will in effect be "current" generation only for three years and usual generation cycle is six years. 2) There is also another possibility. MS will stop supporting XP in 2010 (9 years after release... similar to Win 98... unless, of course, MS will speed up generation exchange and they will stop supporting XP year earlier) and they will keep supporting Vista. This could mean that hotfixes for Xp will freeze and people will be forced to move directly to Vienna (unless they choose Vista which will be already old generation by that time). What is your opinion?
Haha agreed. Although this was an interesting article, it's probably a good move for them in the long run.
I guess i am not that smart as i seem to love my Vista... I think you have to be too geekish to hate it, havent used vista extensively as its on a almost unpacked computer but the vibes that i got with a few moments with her were pretty god. So i guess is Microsoft is indeed coming up with a newer OS then I guess it is damage control
Man you can't even put Vista in the same boat as Me. Vista is a solid OS it just needs some kinks worked out. If you think back to the Xp days everyone hated it and nothing really worked with it. Look what it's become now.
Very interesting I have a 64 bit system with an "older" version of a windows on one drive and vista on another and plan at least 2 if not three or four other OS's (Operating Systems) on other drives. I also have a Good reason for MS (Microsoft) to wonder (Like me) where to move next with my up and coming web site web-counsultant-seo.com But what has Vienna and M1 for English release got to do with anything? I thought Vista (Longhorn) was a scaled up/down version of Windows Server or whatever it is getting called
Surprisingly Microsoft's Vista does seem to have been the flop of all time. Every Webmaster that I know who installed Vista has since gone back to XP. If as you suggest MS decides to stop support for XP there are any number of firms out there now who will gladly offer support. Something tells me thay will need to ve very sure of the acceptance of new products and our willingness to upgrade before they dare to stop support for XP Terrible Terry
