I'm not sure that you'll find a free microblogging solution that you'll like. Obviously the ones at the JED did not meet your approval. What you may want to do is head over to Template Plazza. Though known primarily for their template club, a lot of people don't know that TP also makes several extensions that are part of their templates. For your purposes, you should look at Microblog Plazza. This template package is dedicated to microblogging, and includes microblogging extensions. You can read about and demo the theme here: Microblog Plazza Other than that, unless something else presents itself, you may have to go the custom route to get what you want.
