I Personally Use These 2 Methods To Get Links To My Websites:

1. Email The Owner Of A Site You Like and Ask To Change Links. If You Sell Products OnYour Website That Are The Same or Similar Don't Bother With This...
2. If You Are A Webdesigner Ask Everyone You Do Work For To Link To You and Even Offer To Install The Link For Free.

 

Install the link for free?

 

1. link exchange doesn't offer much value these days
2. developer link is fine but you cannot get much backlinks this way

explore other ways of getting free one way backlinks such as:

directory submission
article submission
dofollow blog commenting
press release
forum signature
squidoo lens
hubpages
dofollow wikis
etc

 

If you use these two methods to get links, its going to be a long and hard road to generate any results. Look at the suggestions sultanofseo posted...

 

I can add:

- design templates templase free for use with "credit" links
- social bookmarking
- linkbaiting (experience is needed to succeed in this one)
- guest posting on other's blogs
- wikipedia (nofollowed, but brings traffic - edit carefully)
- e-mail webmaster and ask

 

these two methods are good but they aren't the only ways, another way is forum signatures and directory submissions

 

I've found a lot of success using free press release sites, as well as forum signatures and blog commenting.

I would suggest you to focus on in-content links from established sites.
They are much better than directory links or links from social bookmarking sites.
Avoid link exchanges. 3 way link exchanges will give you good results if you work with the right guys.

 

Link exchanges for seo are pretty much worthless. Your 2nd method is going to achieve minimal links.

Though lets get onto my main point for replying. Why do you feel the need to capitalize every letter of every word?

I know you say to avoid link exchanges, but what about such things as blogroll link exchanges? Are they worthless too? The reason I ask is because I've seen most of my competitors get their backlinks via this manner. I do obtain link exchanges through blog commenting, but I've seen that these sites with the blogroll links are still beating me out for certain terms.

 

I've exchanged links w/ owners of blogs - but I put the "noFollow" in their link from my page to their site.
