META Tags?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by conorod, Jun 24, 2008.

Some people say that META tags are not worth worrying about any more and that search engines like Google tend to ignore them now. Others say that they are not ignored at all and you should still pay attention to your meta tags. I have no way of telling which of these is correct. Can anyone tell me if META tags are still important for SEO?

    I use both...

I use description, because sometimes search engines still use it, and often will use your description to describe your site (the short description seen under the title of the site when using a search engine).

I use keywords to keep track of the KWs and phrases I use on each page.

So I find both to be useful.

I wouldn't completely ignore them... but at the same time, don't rely on them to get better rankings (you won't)... and definitely don't spam them (don't use the same keywords over and over again - you will get penalized for that).

I know keywords are not that important....but I still use them anyways because the way I see it, a small step is better than no step at all.

They both make enough of a difference to justify the tiny amount of time it takes to add them.

    Pardon?

No they are not, the meta keywords may not be that important anymore as search engines don't see them as accountable sources of information to gather keywords from.

However the description is still used by search engines, and even if it was not it would still have an importance in attracting search engine users to your website.

for some search engines both description and keyword meta tag are important, but for others only description meta tag is important and for still others none is important. So its better to include both for miximum result.

The title and description metatags are very important. The keyword metatag is important but not too relevant on Google anymore. However for Yahoo and MSN it's still important. This is according to the latest SEO reports I see out there and I believe this to be true.

I think you should have them both in place. There's nothing to lose anyway.

I agree that the keyword metatag still is important for Yahoo and MSN because when I have changed the keywords it did change my Yahoo pr.

Yahoo suggest using both according to their webhosting program. I would use them.

Meta tags are still important. If google ignore this, then why more new sites still add metas on it.

I think Title and Description are important to validate the page or sites copy relevance. Keywords are a validation of data on your site but not important but it doesn't do any harm as long as it relates to the information on the page. A title and description have to relate to the copy, the more they are relevant the better. I still cannot understand why two sites talking about the same thing are not listed next to each other on Google.
