    Do meta tags count for anything on google, or are they just ignored.

    Only the title tag and to a lesser extent the description tag is important for Google. Some other search engines still may use the keywords tag but best guess is its importance is minor by now.

    The H1 (Header1) tag also counts a lot now!

    The Hx tags are not Meta tags. Meta tags refer to tags in the <head> -- </head> section of a webpage.

    looking at some of the new results, Google occasionally lists the H1 header as the title instead of the meta tag title.

    I was just trying to clarify since the original poster seemed to be asking specifically about meta tags.

    I would still recommend that you use <TITLE>, <META name="description"
    content=".......">, and <META NAME="keywords" content=".......">. You might also want to include a language tag like <META http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">

    Do pay special attention to the title tag and don't overdo the others.

    Omit any others you may see -- most don't do anyhting and a couple may actually handicap your site.
