    Meta tags are important to help the crawlers of search engines so every webmaster should add it to its HTML just under <head>
    and here is its code

    <meta name="title" content="title" />
    <meta name="description" content="description" />
    <meta name="keywords" content="Keywords" />
    <meta name="author" content="author" />
    <meta name="owner" content="owner" />
    <meta name="copyright" content="(c) 2010" />
    remove the blue colours words and put your own in it and be careful in putting your description and keywords
    hope it will be useful

    Meta tags are over-estimated, search engines are using them less and less because they have been so abused. The main important ones are the "title" tag and the "description" one, though some search engines still use the "keywords" one. The rest is only good to prevent people ripping off the pages from your site and copying them "as is" (yes, including the author, owner and copyright statements, that happened to me some years ago). But search machines care basically only about the title and description.

    There is an additional meta tag that I highly recommend, and that is the "language" tag - though Google does not use it (check my blog series -4 parts- about how search engines identify language), other search engines (such as Yahoo!) DO consider it, and there have been a number of complaints at Google Webmaster that the pages were identified in the incorrect language and therefore did not appear in the search engines.

    The format of this tag is:

    <meta http-equiv=”Content-Language” content=”en” />

    "en" stands here for the English language. For Spanish in Spain you would use: <meta http-equiv=”Content-Language” content=”es-es” />

    The description meta tag is extremely important for all search engines, including Google. When used correctly for a website, it becomes the small bit of text that appears under your link for search results. You can optimize this text to encourage clicks to your site and set your result apart from the competition.

    The latest theory gives Meta Description more importance than tags! because description clearly allows search engine crawlers to trace the keywords listed in meta-description!.... the set of meta tags is become a formality... which can be used for homepage only

    My website House MD Stream was in the top 20 for over 30 different keywords in google without any metatags but in bing it wouldn't even appear in the top 100. So I decided to put metatags on my site and my bing SERPS sky rocketed! So if you want to spam an SE with meta tags, its should be Bing!

    G doesn't care about meta anything except title, as SEOTranslator said. But a well-worded meta description can help boost CTR from the SERPs to your site.

    Correction: Google only cares (from the quoted metatags) about the description. The meta description in combination with the title tag will be shown in the search engine. If there are no descriptions Google takes it own from the webpage, this can result in a description you dont want to see in the SERP.

    Are you 100% sure of that? Just because google says it, it doesn't mean it's true. They could just lie so people won't abuse it. For all we know meta tags could be a really important factor but google just says it isn't so they won't get abused as much.

    Yes, you should always include meta tags into your website. Even if Google does not care, although I would disagree and say that meta tags still probably score very small with Google and most other search engines. It only takes about 2 minutes to create your meta tags so why not do it.

    Google does care about meta tags. I dont care what they say, I have run several experiments proving that. But they are a small factor. In Bing though, its the most important factor!

    Bing and Yahoo care about meta, but Google doesn't.

    Using Title, Keywords and Description tags are enough IMO - also watch out for allowed length of each values!

    Meta tags are not that important these days but still if someone want to put effort on it then only 'description' tag would be worth considering.

    They do care about title and Description meta tag... keyword meta tag is useless and rest of them can be used to direct crawlers.
