    Can someone tell me what's the difference between these two:

    <meta name="robots" content="index all, follow all" />
    <META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index, follow">

    And which is better?

    And also is this code valid? <META NAME="author" content="" /> Sale

    My dear.. there is no difference... they are both useless

    Indexation will have more bearing due to BLs than anything (and the algos rules), much like the 'revisit' tag, we do not tame the beasts - they live by their own rules

    They are the BOTs - resistance is futile

    U only really need them when you DON'T want (Noindex Nofollow) something indexed

    ..and no.. the author tag isn't worth much either... looks nice though

    :D[/QUOTE]

    This part is ok for me, i was just wondering why this person put the word "sale" on the end of the author meta. You noticed that?

    The first line is completely invalid - you should use the second line instead. However, bots will always assume "index, follow" (aka "all") if this line is not present, so there's not a lot of point to it. You only need to put this line if you want to specify "noindex" or "nofollow" or "noarchive".

    Syntax of Author tag is correct, but useless if empty.

    Add the following to any pages that you do not want to show up in the search engine indexes. I use them on all admin pages and pages that I do not want to show up in search engines and it has always worked for me.

    <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow">
    <meta name="robots" content="noarchive">

    If you have links on a page that you want the spiders to follow, the meta tag would be:

    <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow">

    I use that tag on forms and pages without any content.

    You can also eliminate files from the indexes using the robots.txt file, but the search engines (particularly Google) are slow to respond to changes to robots.txt.

    The general rule with meta tags is: If it isn't needed, leave it out.

    I think you should use the second line for convenience and easy to remember.

    Follow up question, is Sale included in your question or only the meta tag author?

    First, none of the tags above have value. Don't use them.

    Second, if you need to block directories or subdirectories, then you should use the robots.txt file as recommended by ALL search engines.

    But from the competitive SEO standpoint, adding all of these meta tags just adds characters to you page and will screw up your text to code ratio. Remember:

    Small file size pages rank higher that than large file size pages
    Pages with a higher CodeToText ratio rank higher that low CodeToText pages.

    Why add garbage to your page. You don't even need the meta keyword tag any more.
