Meta Tags Are No Longer Important?

Many Gurus (and pretenders) are saying/writing that meta tags are no longer important because the SEs are getting smarter.

    Your comment please. Thanks.

Whether they are still important or not, it will never affect if they exist on your site, just don't abuse on using them.

    Guys,
First of all SEO methods depends on the spider (different SEs have different bots). Each bot has its own unique algorithm for crawling and indexing web pages.
as far as i know most of the main bots are updated frequently. Hence you cant point out a thumb rule saying a 1 specific thing is important or not.
To be in white hat SEO you should make sure that you put your content in a way which is noticeable (obviously your keywords will be included when u do so).
    thats what i think.

So i dont think you can tell that a bot gives more weigh on one point.

white hat rocks long time...... black hat rocks short time... ;-)

    cheers

I think it is more important to have the correct keyword density not meta tag.

    Am I right?

I would think so because I'm lazy to add meta tag for keywords and description but
many of my webpages are getting high rankings for many highly competitive
keywords like "digital products", "cheap ebooks", etc.

you cant identify a person without a name,in the same way search engines cant identify the type of website content without metatags. so metatags are stil relevant for search engines

Very important for me. If someone said they're not important, was he removed them from his site ?

    Gurus, names please?

A lot of those "gurus" are full of crap and are just trying to sell you some BS eBook about how to reach success by using their affiliate links. However there are some legit experts out there so if one them said so, it's possible. Still, if they aren't as important, it doesn't hurt to have them right?

Google disregards the description META tag and the keyword tag, but thinks the Title tag is important. the text within the Title tag is a representation of what is inside the site. The Title tag is best when it includes 75 characters of keywords.

It is worth noting that the Title tag is far and away the most important spot for gaining rankings. Focus on one or two phrases and include them in the Title and Description tags.

Google picks up your page description from the text within the page, and that way search results are based upon the actual content of the page. Google believe it is the information contained on a page that the user is looking for rather than lavish words that the Web designer placed in a description tag in hopes of matching search terms. Google produces produces relevant results that match the search term by examining the words on a site, where the words sit on the page, and how important the text is by comparing font sizes. the text contained in bold tags, heading tags, or large font sizes are used as important keywords in the calculation.

Search engines still count meta tags as a factor in providing search results. Page Titles, Meta Keywords, Meta Description are the most relevant tags that should be prioritize for effective search engine optimization.

If you ditch your meta description, google or whomever will just come up with their own description of your site based on the content. It may not be an accurate reflection of the page. Regardless of it's ranking influence, you should do it to improve click thru ratio on the search engines results page. A 5th ranked listing can get more clicks than a 1st rank listing if it has a well written description.
