My site does pretty well for keywords, from its content only ie: I dont have a < meta keyword line etc..

Because my site HTML is pretty much slapped together, if I add a meta line for extra keywords will it stop search engines from reading the content ?

And I take it there is one kind of <meta name="keywords" way of doing it ?

Why would it? Robots.txt tells a search engine to stop reading a page or site.
Adding keywords meta tag is something you do for exercise, keep your fingers in shape : ) Does nothing either way with search engines. They care about the content.

Having a few of the biggest key words in your title (be more specific on each page what that page is really about) does help though. The bots look at the title, and if the content matches the title, it tells them that that site probably really is about [key word].
