Sometimes i hear different kinda stories about the use of the META keywords tag when using SEO ...i'm busy with SEO for a webshop and i'm also working on the META keywords tag. I need to do a lot of pages so i'd like to no if it's important for Google to use the META keywords tag or doesn't do anything at all with it! Otherwise, what are the most important thing to do when using SEO for a webshop?

    Kind regards,

Forget about meta tags or keywords now.
This is considered as "dead" already.
What is more important is "CONTENT"
    the "uniqueness" of your content.

Sorry Rohit but you are wrong. Meta tags are play very important role in SEO. If you are not use/write metatags then you can not get the perfect result. But according you say content is also useful for the getting best result for your site keywords. Remember metatags are called first. And after it take the keywords from contents. You both must read about the metatags importance from google.

I was doing a case study on a site that uses meta tags and the site that dont use meta tags.
I found out that site with meta tags were just the same to the site with no meta tags.

    I'll dig more about this.

Thanks to both of you spaculus and EscalateSEO.

The only good thing about meta tags is that your meta tag description will Bold your keywords in the listings. Go ask any proper SEO Agency.

Meta tags are somehow important, of course the most important tag is title tag and even Google ignoring description tag, this tag should also appear on your pages. Keyword tag can be ignored, but if you put it, for sure it will not gonna hurt! So use meta tags.

The question was about the meta keywords tag.

I still add one to each new page. I do realize that probably Google no longer pays any attention to it. But it's still possible that some of the other search engines may still pay some attention to it. So since it only takes me about one minute to add a meta keywords tag, I still do it. I'm willing to spend that extra minute for even the slight advantage it might give in search engines other than Google. And, who knows, maybe some day Google will once again pay some minor attention to the keywords meta tag. If so, I will already have one on each of my pages and won't have to play catch-up.

Those of you with very large websites and thousands of pages, you might not feel like spending the time to add a meta keywords tag to each page.

Meta keywords used to have a great weight in SEO but it is not as important as it used to be in past, although putting meta tags is still a good practice.

Google doesn’t use this tag any more as a ranking signal, but other search engine use it.

Your site will rank on the first page of Google, Yahoo or Bing if you choose correct keyword for SEO.

Using your META tags properly means the difference between good SEO and lousy SEO. Resist the temptation to cram them full of keywords. Choose keywords that are both relevant to your site, and frequently searched. The right keywords make all the difference. And never forget: often in SEO, less really is more.
