Meta description tag - different on sub-pages?

Discussion in 'Google' started by Wiitabix, Aug 28, 2008.

Is it okay to have a different description in the description tag on each sub-page on a site?

Does Google 'object' to this for any reason?

Same question applies to the keywords tag.

    Thanks

The meta description SHOULD be different for each page. It tells a searcher what the page relates to. Keywords too, although Google does not read them anymore.

Meta description is one of the most important things you can use to help your position in the SERPs and also getting people to click on your link when it comes up in a search engine. Make sure your page description is unique on every page, has the keywords you have targeted for your page, and is also a call to action. Make it a statement that makes searchers want to click through to your site.

it does read them, and gives you some added edge in seo, as I got about 400 error reports in GWT showing duplicate meta descriptions, if it wasn't important it wouldn't put that there imo.

You have to write different descriptions for every page. And I suggest you do not worry about keyword tag as google and some other SEs no longer use this tag any more.

you are doing the right thing buddy, each webpage of your site SHOULD be unique to that particular page. In fact Google may penalise you if you have duplicate tags. All the best with your site

Well my vote is most definitely and in fact I'd strongly advise you use Google Webmaster Tools to get it to spot duplicate meta tag descriptions among other things. The pages you may have the duplicate tags with may not even be part of your site anymore but they still show up as duplicate. I had some pages that haven't been up for 3 or 4 years show up in this. This included some real nasty links pages which scared the hell out of me that they were still listed. You need to get them deleted from the results as they will never go away otherwise and will continue to haunt you ;)

Do the keywords and descriptions have to be 100% different from page to page? Or can they share similar words, but each one has some of its own 'unique' words, so differentiating it from the rest?
