    The meta description doesn't have much impact on SEO anymore, but it's still used in other places - it's the description of your site that's shown in Google when someone is searching for you, and is sometimes the fallback in loose OpenGraph implementations where no og:description tag is present.

    Use it to give a short, accurate description of your product

    The meta description tag provides a brief description of your web page which can be used by search engines or directories. This description can affect your search engine rankings, and can also show up directly in search engine results.

    Here is one sample from Groupon:
    Offering daily deals at restaurants, retailers and service providers.

    When a search happen, your meta tags will insist your customer to choose whether to click on the site or not.

    So Meta tag is important if you are targeting people via organic search. For paid search, its not important.

    Hello, Yes you can set product meta tags.

    1) By going in the "Admin panel" > "select Catalog" > "Manage Products".

    2) Select the respective product to edit by clicking Edit on its respective row.

    3) Select Meta Information tab from the left panel. It will display a window that will contain Meta Title, Meta Keywords and Meta Description. Enter the Meta Title, Meta Keywords and Meta Description and save the product.
