Hi all, I need your expert opinion on the possibility of making a WP based gaming/contest site? I am clueless about the technical possibility of this but am clear with what I need done. Here is the core need. It's going to be a free (but registration based) membership site Members will have control panels to monitor their individual cumulative scores A random number generator script/plugin to choose the winner of the month An aggregator script to reward the highest overall scorer of the month Members can play any number of games only after loging in with each win or points scored adding to the tally Each game to be monetized with CPA products automatically when uploaded This is the skeleton. Flesh and blood may be added later and when needs arise. (Actually, I am not sure how and which way it develops; so much so, you can safely assume that it can't be any different than what is already there on the net). I would like experts on DP to suggest me the possibility of this WP. Actually, I am not dead fixed on WP, just that I have a passionate leaning towards it after having used it for an year or so. So, being the experts that you are, you may feel free to suggest me any other platform which would be better suited from the perspective of the users as well as the webmaster. Just feel free to critique my need also (as, I am not even sure whether this is a justifiable ask). Just use your experience and innovativeness. This is still to take shape before it can get to be a project. I am examining the pros and cons of it, so actual implementation may take some time. That's all guys. Now, it's all yours. Thank you all.
Can it be done on Worpdress? Absolutely. However many of the functions that you need are not readily available as plug ins. You would likely have to have what you need designed or programmed to your specifications, especially #2 and #4.
@hmansfield Thanks for replying. Actually, this was my hunch - special things always need to be custom developed. But is it going to be the same case in Joomla, phpNuke and Drupal also? And I would also be interested to know overall, how does wordpress compare against the other platforms- for issues like security, ease of use etc.
I can't speak for those other platforms since I only work with Wordpress. I think Wordpress is the best thing since sliced bread, but i know its not the answer for every situation and this may be one of them. As far as ease of use. I find it very easy, but it all comes with a learning curve. No matter what you use, you will still have to configure a back end for users who are not developers or web savvy. IOW, you are still going to have to dumb down the admin area for regular people. Security should be added no matter what platform. I wouldn't rely on too many things out of the box. There are plenty of security plug ins that give a little extra protection, that work just fine. Which you use just depends on how you have your installation set up..as a single site or as a network of sites and blogs. I'd be interested to hear what the other platforms have to offer. I am sure that there may be something out there that can get you close, and then just mod the rest.
