    Hey,
Me and the girlfriend have decided to start up a blog, just we have come across a problem, neither of us have ANY experience in the blogging world, we are currentley trying to find a 'niche' to make the blog about, but we do not want the niche to be dominated by 100000's of other blogs, The idea was originally mine, i am fine organising everything, setting the blog up, adsense etc etc and "getting it out there", i just suffer from 'bloggers block' and my girlfriend is genious at writing, that is where she comes in, she will write the content etc, I am looking for a few contacts, maybe people who have been doing this for years, or people that are also 'starting up', that i could chat to via Email/Msn etc (pm me), Just neither of us have any hobbies =/, I'm not looking for answers, im looking for suggestions, someone to open my creative mind?, we are willing to build the blog for months on months and make it a hobby, we are willing to invest money in to the blog, we're just a bit stuck on what to blog about and a blogger that has somewhat of an idea in the blogging industry might be able to help. If you have anything negative to say about my thread pm me, so i can delete it without others having to read it aswell :).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Treyno.

Well, is there anything that you like to read when you go online? Do you like to read about latest gadgets, stock market, books, php, farms, weed, tattoos, stars, movies? Go through your favorites and see what niche pops up the most, that means you like that niche, then start writing your opinion about that niche...

    Hey Treyno ,

first of all I wish you and your girlfriend the best in your ventures!

I hear you 1000000%.. Im great at web stuff & technicaly bit but i have a bloggers block when it comes to writing.. :) So i can understand that piece..

Finding the right niche is probably the toughest piece in this game.

Keep in mind the theory of the "long tail"..

    I read a book related to this by Chris Anderson - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Tail & http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.10/tail.html

Basically - If you can come up with the most obscure search term and target it , people will come.

For example - "pink mounain hiking boots"

Im not suggesting you start a blog on that but when you do a good search ,you get less than 35K results which should be an easy target.

pink hiking boots is less attractive at 445K but still possible.

You'll notice that the sites that appear on top *target* this keyword(s)

Theres stats out there ( http://www.searchingsolutions.com/new-search-engine-long-tail-statistics/) that suggest people dont just search for "IPOD" and end there.

They will start at ipod and then maybe "25gb ipod" , "blue 25gb ipod"...

Where all this rant is leading is that .. pick something you are remotely interested in and start blogging.. and make sure its something you can "monetize" .. A tip - I always look on the bottom of any online site that sells stuff for "Affiliates" or "Affiliate Signup"

Maybe even book reviews on books that arent main stream - you can easily set yourself up with an amazon associate account and make money there..

I hope this hasnt sounded like a crazy rant and has helped somehow!

    Best of luck mate!

Forget trying to "find" a niche.

Blog about what you find interesting.

    Works every time.

I agree with this. Picking something interesting to you is the most important thing to do as you will be able to write with passion about the subject and it won't get boring quickly. If you blog about something you enjoy, your blogging will feel like entertainment and not a "job".

Yeah, you should blog about something you like, and now something you think will give you a lot of money per click.

Be specific on anything you like. Generate good content and promote it.. Don't worry much about the saturation in the niche you are writing.

I have started a project on the side Reviewing programs, and upcoming programs, also people can submit programs to me, let me review them, if theyre good enough, i will help promote in a top 3 monthly, it's just a start to help get the ball rolling, the girlfriend isn't interested in this kind of stuff, if i was to involve her in a blog, i would have to set everything up, design it, and get it SEO, then she can just log in and update the content :) So it's finding something SHE is interested in tbh, i will get her to reply tonight when she is home from work, or i will reply for her :), thanks for the help so far, didn't expect so many to spend time to help me. Cheers.

I just recently decided that while every site I have is working for me, it isn't easy to speak to people with different interests than you. So, I started a drum blog, mostly about famous drummers with videos, bios and photos. On my first Google index I was on the second page for a lot of keywords that I need like 'famous drummers'...now, I'm on the first page! It is something I love and I'm on the first page for a lot of stuff...that is what you want my friend. I'm not worrying about traffic, just relying only on google search and providing useful information to the search engine.
Good luck to you and your girlfriend, I hope to read a success story post on here about you 2 someday.

You are going to have to get your minds focused on why you are blogging. Is it for money or as a potential business? If you don't have any interests or hobbies you want to write about then you gotta look at it that way. Another good way to get over the writers block is to write about things you have a lot of knowledge about. You gotta be really good or knowledgeable about something, blog about it.

I look at it like a business so that's what motivates me even if it's the most boring thing in the world to blog about. But I have found blogging about things you are interested in is just so much easier and enjoyable.

    cheers!
