IMHO issue is the sunk costs of 4000 lives and $3 trillion dollars as estimated by Newsweek. How is anyone going to account for that if US just leave Iraq to have it split into the various spheres of influences by nations considered less than desirable to the US.

That's based upon the notion that at some point, this war is going to justify $3 trillion and 4,000 lives, 20,000+ injured (not including contractors or Iraqis).

This war has become so heinous, so wrong I can't imagine any scenario short of eternal world peace that could justify this. I have trouble justifying the idea of killing one civilian, let alone thousands.

To me a cold blooded novice economist I would say it is a sunk cost, but not to those in power. They won't see it that way.

The problem with division is that, it will bring an everlasting fight amongst those who get there piece and those who can't even though they believe they definetaly should. For instance, there are Assyrians and Turkmens in the north, they won't just comprise to the minority status based on population. Besides, there is no such unity unlike the common thought, among the tribal groubs within same ethnicities. The resources are not spread homogenic alongside Iraq which will also develop a constant problem no matter what agreement reached at the time of splitting the regions. Also, the division will raise issues that roots back to the establishment of Iraq, the rights and resources that were granted, the treaties, will be invalid hence questionable once there is no Iraq of what we know. To sum it up, imho, keeping Iraq united is the only reasonable solution, by considering the fact that Iraq is not yet ready for a democracy, and not enforcing a pro-American president as mandatory who has issues about unity. That won't ever likely to happen as long as there is an occupation, so this problem will remain for quite a long time.
