May I sell wordpress with some modifications or even without modifications?

Here is a silly question. I tried to go through their Detailed license terms and conditions, but I found it too lengthy also the language is too tough.

So the question in short is just that may I sell the wordpress ( any version ) with or without modifications ?
Will you please explain a little !

I'm wondering this too. I've heard of many people selling their blogs so I guess it should be cool.
At least if it has content.

Well , I do not think u can sell the script itself , but u can sell the service of installing wordpress scripts and also sites made with wordpress, as long as they have some content.

You can't sell Wordpress - only the design you've made for it, or the labor you put into setting it up for someone.

I think you can sell Wordpress blog in terms of contents, traffics, and PR that your blog have but not the Wordpress script.

Who would buy something that is free ?
If you have some skills or talents in customizing Wordpress, why not just offer your services as a WP specialist or service provider ?

Many people do it (including myself), but I think trying to resell the script itself is futile no matter what modifications you make to it.

I've never read the license, but I am sure that there is something in there about reselling their product...it's not yours to sell.

I think you are confusing things. You can make money by charging people to install, set up, customize, troubleshoot, host and any other kind of WP related services, but you cannot re-package and sell Word Press itself. Again, it is not yours to sell.

One more time...It is not yours to sell. You cannot sell Word Press.

Its not mine, I know. I am not confused. But I am just asking about their Licence statement, like Linux allows reselling and many other software allow Resell Rights.. I am asking the same thing about wordpress, I can make the software sell with some modifications and mostly bundling. :) I know how to make people buy it :)

If you can get Automatic to allow you a license to resell Word Press, then go for it. I am curious to see what kind of changes that you can make to the program that haven't been done before, or what kind of services you can offer that are so original.

I still thing that you should concentrate on customizing WP, and support. The only people that will even think about buying WP are other webmasters, most who probably have the ability to do what ever it is that you are offering.

For people who are not versed in building websites with WP , it doesn't matter how you package it, they still need someone to set it up for them, and therefore would not buy it on their own.

Even if you could get a license granted, I just don't see it...but, then again, maybe you have reinvented the wheel.

You don't need a license from Automattic to sell copies of WordPress. The GPL just requires you to include a copy of the source code as well as include the copyrights of the developers:

    http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/selling.html

Developers sell installations of wordpress all the time. There's a fairly good size market of such on the wpmu forums.

The software is "free" as in what you can do with it. It's not "free" as in cost.

A perfect example of this is phpnuke where the developer charges ten bucks for a download of the latest version. What you do with it afterwards, even if you were to give it away, is up to you.

    edit: Another example: http://www3.elphel.com/licensing

You than run into the argument of if WordPress is really GPL'ed or not and it's come up many many times previously. The GPL says you can sell copies of the software as long as 1) the copyright notice is included 2) the GPL license is included and 3) the source code is available upon request.

In the bit you quote, there's no statement that the software can't be resold. GPL licensed software gets resold all the time. We had that case with Blackberry a few years back. Also this recent one in France:

    http://opendotdotdot.blogspot.com/2009/09/big-win-for-gnu-gpl-in-france.html

Granted I agree with you that offering the Wordpress software for a fee would be nuts since you can just download it. That's why many folks and developers work either the install market or fill it up with addons and plugins.

One other thing to remember. You don't actually buy the software (or the book or the cd or the dvd) You buy or obtain a license to use the software.

Maybe it will work. I would go over the WP TOS and License with a fine toothed comb, just to make sure that you are right before you started selling it.
