May I ask a newbie question about keywords?

Lets say I have a hog farm in Vermont. I might use 3 keywords to start. hog, hogs, vermont.

The queston is will the search engines put keywords together? IE. Do I need to have

    hog,hogs,vermont,vermont hogs,vermont hog,hogs vermont,hog vermont

If the user types in vermont hogs and I only have hog, hogs, vermont will it find me?

Do I need to have the other 4 two word keywords or am I wasting keyword space?

If I want to reach users in the surrounding states do I just need to put those state names in or do I have put another list of two word keywords?

    Thanks so much.

I think vermont hogs would be better to target.

Having too many keywords for the same page is like spamming the search engines with keywords...you should consider having different pages for each of these keywords and try and use them in the page content

While trying to come up in search results for different places...the best option would be again talking about how you provide services to these locations in the content of the pages

    You have it where?

Look, your website content is about hogs. And your hog farm is located in vermont. So simply write that naturally in a text: describe your business, describe what you offer and what differs your offer from others, tell your visitors why should they choose you etc etc. Don't think of your site as a set of keywords. Think of what value it provides to your visitors. If you write naturally, your target keywords will appear naturally in a text without any additional efforts from your side.

Also, look at the tutorial in my sig for more on-site optimization methods.

All good replies. Also, keep in mind that in addition to using the keywords naturally in the page content, you should use the specific keyword in the title, url, description,h1 tag and meta keyword tag (although this isn't really used much anymore it can't hurt as long as the keywords in the tag are also in your content somewhere).

And...if you target a multi word keyword phrase, such as Vermont hog farm, you are also targeting the individual keywords that make up the phrase, ie. Vermont, Vermont hog,Vermont farm and hog farm.
