What is recommended maximum number of new backlinks in a month?. I am in the process of getting backlinks but am afraid if I overdo it.

I am not really sure that there is a maximum amount. I tend to try keep the amount of backlinks growing at a fairly constant rate on a permanent basis. e.g. If I get 300 links to a new site in its first month, I try and get at least an additional 300 links for each and exery month afterwards.

I agree there isnt a set amnt but large spikes may increase your chance of throwing up a flag to the search engines.

Large spikes in normal, digg and so on. But large spikes from unrelated sites are more suspicious.

I think if your site has got more than 10000 back links in the first month itself

    it matters a lot!

you may get penalized for it!

 But if you get only one sitewide link from a page that has lets say 5.000 indexed pages, that would make 5000 links?!?

I think the backlink speed issue is a myth and really shouldn't be something that slows you down in your attempt to acquire new links.

I have experimented this on several sites and had no ill affects. Of course, there is such thing as Google Bomb tests that talk about this also, do a search for "Google Bomb" and you will learn a lot about this topic for the extreme side.

But for most folks / webmasters , just get links and don't worry about how many you are doing.

I completely agree with gford, it's a myth. Get 100 links per month from related sites and you're golden.

Okay, maybe I'm aiming a bit high...

    100 sounds nice.

    And I agree it's a myth.

Its all he said she said. No one can say for certain if this is a myth, you cannot prove this with a study or example like most things. IMO what happens if google instantly sees thousand of backlinks all of a sudden they are going to assess your site a bit differently from then on. You essentially get put into a section of googles back end statistics. I am sure they keep record of all this. Google likes site's that naturally build links over time. They don't like people gaming there system.

They have to protect there SERPS from spammers.

Will you get penalized and drop from googles serps for having a ton of backlinks at one time, No, probably not. But to say google does nothing with regards to record keeping and evaluation of a site is a bit stretching it. This isnt MSN were talking about :p
