I wouldn't over due it, it's possible to throw up a flag if your spamming your meta tags. My suggestion would be to stay around the 20 word range, keep it simple and hit your big hitters.

Best case scenario is that if you have 1000 keywords in your meta tag it won't effect your ranking.

1000 keywords :O wow that would be classed as spam.

for me i dont have a limit but normally i put
2 or 3 keywords in the title.
    a description of 100 to 200 characters
and a max of 5 keywords.

Yeah, 1000 keywords is pointless and would be classed as spam by every worthwhile search engine. How could one page adequately be treated with any degree of importance when it had 1000 keywords... it would be a dictionary list in effect but even then it would make much more sense to have 1 word with all interpretations of it listed at content, and not keywords. The keywords would be variations of the spelling perhaps, but definately nowhere near 1000 words.

Many search engines ignore keywords, but any page should try and focus exactly what is on their page - if a page doesn't contain a keyword listed then it is ignored or deemed irrelevant and could penalize that page/site.

Notice he mentioned the description of 100 to 200 characters, not words, but characters which is different. The description should also adequately describe the contents of a page.

A title is very useful to help identify what a page is about so 1 or 2 keywords appearing in the page title will be beneficial - there is no sense having excessively long titles that will dilute the page relevance to the content on the actual page.

Slightly different theory, but I use

    title: 70 chars
    desc: 155 chars

because they display in the search results properly and that draws attention when your result is the 7th on the page of search engine results.

it doesn't matter how many words in the 3 tags, though normally title shall be less than 100, description around 300, and keyword is useless for major search engines. The important thing is that you shall have your keywords in the title and description tag.

But for a keyword tag with 1000 words, definitely it will dilute the importance of your target keywords.
