Hi All, What is the max length of a url should be that a search engine could crawl and index ? Is there any guideline for that ?
2 kilometers! No but the maximum URL length is 2,083 characters in Internet Explorer. Don't know what the SE's limits is.
The answer to this i guess depends on the reason for asking. If its totally technical then probably mammut's answer above is a good enough guideline. If you are asking in relation to SEO (ie the forum the question is posted) then i wouldn't advise a URL of 2083 characters. I would tend to approach URL's in a similar way to page titles, try and keep them as short and keyword rich as possible. I would think that a URL like: http://www.domain.com/blue-widgets.html Code (markup): would be better than... http://www.domain.com/a-great-company-selling-some-well-known-blue-widgets-for-everyone-to-buy-at-great-prices-and-a-cherry-on-top.html Code (markup): at ranking for the keyword "blue widgets" (given all other things are equal)
It doesn not matter whether your URL has length of 15 or 150; Google will crawl and index it. But its much better to have short url otherwise it does look like a sentence as dplgngr said.
