I have been working in the IT industry for over 10 years, 6 of those years at a professional level. By professional I mean that the income generated from this activity supports my family, pays my bills and so on. I don't believe there is any industry in the World where everyone seems to think that they can become an expert over night. This is more noticeable when you attempt to do business with someone on-line you haven't really met, and then you slowly start noticing a serious lack in the overall business skills, to later find out that you were dealing with a 15 year old kid that could be your sun/daughter, with no experience whatsoever in the field. And by experience, I am not referring to experience in the technical aspect of the job, I am talking about a general sensitivity toward business in general. You can only adquire this after years of consulting work, and years of social interaction with clients of diverse areas. Now, I have no presegous against young people, most of them are very skilled and enthusiastic about their work, but at the end of the day, maturity is as important as the product your trying to sell. What is your experience regarding this?
I agree with you I'm only 23 years old but i don't consider myself an exper maybe in a few years i will be an expert
I have encountered quite a few webmasters or programmers that have made promises of being knowledgeable or that can meet deadlines only to find that they consistently miss them or don't have the experience that they claimed to have. I also have heard the same complaint from other people trying to find good quality people just as the OP has. So what is it about the IT sector that attracts people that make promises that eventually they can't deliver on?
As a Web Master and Internet Entrepreneur for over 7 years I've realized that those who are younger can be smarter than those who are older and those who are older can lack just as much common sense and business ethics as expected from those who are younger. When dealing with Programming, Web Design, and IT related work maturity is earned by experience. Not age. A skill can be taught, a talent cannot. A 45 year old man who has worked on Web Sites off and on in his spare time for 3 years may not be as skilled as a 17 year old who has done nothing but web sites for 2 years. But if you choose to judge maturity and experience based on age you can, will, or eventually make the wrong choice and fail. Your post is technically about dealing with the less skilled. And really, you can be any age and lack business ethics and experience. I once bought a product that was made by a 19 year old. I had no idea. But I purchased the product because it was good. My last client was a 46 year old man who claimed he was a 'no joke' business man and marketer. He was a complete joke and too lazy to become successful. In this business it's all about reading people. You MUST have the ability to read people to be a successful business man in any field. Only then can you determine who someone really is. If you judge clients or future partners based on age (whether young or old) you really have no business sense to begin with. I personally will not do business with PEOPLE who posses poor business ethics and lack a skill or talent. Just my $2.02.
