Sorry to say this but nothing can last forever. I am sure matt will die one day like rest of us and so will google eventually one day.

Technology is the key to all the major problems..

Yes Directories will last forever! But Search Engines are not!

I am glad that Matt has cleared the doubt over directories

But how they are going to find quality directories?

just to work for the quality of the directory and directory will exist.

I am sure many people want to know how Google defines a quality directory. :)

Just what is Matt Cutts and Google saying? I have seen reference to terms like unsavoury and flawed economy but where do they come from? What is everyone talking about? There appears to be some confusion here and I think that it needs to be clarified.
Most certainly and anyone who believes that a bid of $1300 dollars on any directory is anything but unsavoury and flawed, is kidding themselves.

Where do we stand? What is a quality directory? How many directories are not built for SEO purposes?

A Quality Directory is a Directory which consists of Quality listings in a directory in addition to the promotion of a directory.

Yes but does Google see it that way? What if that dirctory is clearly seen to be part of that flawed econonmy of link building and trading in an effort to raise or distribute these scores?

What is a quality listing? Is it a listing for which a webmaster is prepared to pay $200 a year to guarantee inclusion or is there more to it? How do you feel about MFA?

A website can be defined as a Quality website if it is approved in some good quality directories(Free and Paid)

This is where I start having a problem. When I find a directory thats being touted around as an Authority Site or as a Trusted Site or as a Respected Site let alone a Quality Site and if I then find that the content does not match up to my expectations I begin to question the scale of values. Am I wrong?

How do you feel about MFA? Can we accept an MFA site as a "quality" site if it pays the door fee, looks the part and gets listed in a number of Quality Directories? I think not. This to me is what they were referring to as an unsavoury practise. Do you disagree?

An MFA site can't be accepted!

Also The MFA site may get listed in a couple of directories but it is difficult for a site to get listed in all directories!

This we agree on. Editorial integrity must be the cornerstone of any measure of value and I would expect quality sites to be transparent and publicly accountable for the content they carry.

How would you feel about a list where the measure of value was based on the directory masters willingness to invite criticism of the directories listed content? This to me would have some meaning and I am sure its the sort of thing Google has in mind when it starts shuffling its feet and muttering about quality. I am afraid I dont see much in the way of quality and that has got to change if we are going to salvage any long term value from this industry.

I agree with this but what are we talking about when we start promoting a directory?

I get told all the time that I must start spending $$$ that I dont have. This to pay door money and to crack the nod that allows me to get on first name terms with the boys? After that I am expected to spread a little happiness around amongst the hangers on and to then join the club and participate in that mindless "what are the strongest directories" mantra that we see one after the other. Is this "promotion"? Do me a favour and look at Eco Guides. Is this a quality directory that is worth promoting? What would Matt have to say about this one?

I just happen to know the directory master. She is intimidated by the net but has a wealth of experience she could share and if you have a spare $5 help me to convince her its what she should be doing. Cheap shot I know but try to understand that I dont believe that a directory thats four months old with PR5 and four thousand five hundred back links is anything but a scam and no amount of promotion is gong to convince me otherwise.
    What is Matt talking about?

    why i like mark's plan:

dir is long time web site - just keep it updated.

SEs like it - good SEO dir brings you plenty of traffic.

    traffic=rev.

currently I run 50 dirs and continue expanding to the other niches.

Yeah right, empty categories with a PR5 is quality, and I'm the love child of the pope.
