    Yahoo is not just a paid directory, I've had a few sites get in for free. As for link exchanges, it's generally accepted that as long as the link exchange is done to benefit your visitor (IE - you have a pet site and are reciprocating links with other informative pet sites).

    Ok than how does google distinguish a link from paid and from link thats exchanged ? :p

    Please ask a sensible question, or at least better define what you mean by "link exchanges"
    This is true - although the free listing is onlt for "non commercial" sites these days
    That is a better way to look at it, for sure
