Interesting post. It's pretty cool how Matt jumped in and helped him out.

This is pretty old news to be honest - Matt has warned numerous times against participating in link exchange systems. Although this is the first time I have seen him openly name DP's COOP

I agree that Matt seems like a good guy, but I hate the fact that Google is punishing us for being on top of our game :p

Noticing how he says his google rankings jumped drastically after Matt's help.

It is disturbing that so much of google rankings (which make or break each of our businesses) can be changed by their manual tweaking.

Well, it could be because he sold links and used the co-op ad network, right?

Blame it on the MFA idiots that think PR is all it takes.

I very much doubt its manual tweaking - he removed coop ads on Matt's advise, and his rankings came back. This is easy with an alogrithm. Its not likely google has hundreds of monkeys manually putting rankings up and down.

It's only a matter of time before G updates their algorithim to detect link network schemes.

Well I thought I'd try the coop and started seeing some of the back links in yahoo that started showing up over the last couple of days. They are all really spammy crappy sites for things like cialis and sites in other languages.

I really don't want these kinds of back links to my site so I went ahead and deleted the coop code today.

This really is no different than any other link exchange scheme and I can't imagine why anyone would want to be a part of it now. I just hope that I got the code off of my site before it could do any damage.

how can they tell coop link scheme?

what if you spammed your competitors site with lots of links from bad neighborhoods, would google help you by punishing your competitor's site? ...or is only outlinks from a site that googe looks at?

I think they already are detecting it. I was checking the ranks of some of the coop's top appearing links on my sites and they all fell quite a few positions this week alone.

Some even disappeared. I'm not spreading FUD, just sharing my own experience with it this week.

There's no way to find out someone is part of an ad-exchange scheme, is there? How is it technically possible?

There are all kinds of ways, actually. The Coop is particularly easy, unless less it's changed radically since the last time I looked at it.
