We know what we all want as directory owners...
PR so that we look good for our submitters plain and simple...

You can still have that by advertising on high or low PR sites that are "relevant" to
the site your adding link on and this due to the fact that it can be said....
well we are just doing for traffic and know one can question your intentions....
Because the site is RELEVANT to yours

What google is trying to do is stop the spamming ....
or over inflation of crap sites just cause they buy links
from higher pr sites that which in turn inflate that sites PR

when you do these type of actions you are manipulating their fundamental
joy toy which is the PR valuation of a site and the basic reason they are
cracking down on those whom take advantage of a situation

    thx

alright enough with inflate / explode etc. pr crap. You guys really think thats what google is actually trying to do ? :D . Time will tell what really google is after which i have tried to explain , but time will tell if what i said was all bs or actually had some weight.

So what ur saying maclom is that some jerk with lots of money , has pr 9 or pr7 sites and want to take out all his competitors out with one blow ? Hey decides to purchase an old domain with really good PR not related to their competitor, and goes wham wham and puts his competitors sites link there and puts in big bold letters " Hey Buy ur links today before deal closes" all over the site.

So, does google kill all his competitors sites (which do not happen to be high quality *cough here how does google define quality again, is it like dmoz quality :p ? Pretty cool move huh by one smart competitor to take out his/her rivals out of google ? :p

Did google even realize the outcomes of what they are trying to do ?

The news seems to be positive to directory industry. But we all need to be careful when adding sponsors, especially at the home page. Adult sites and other commonly recognized suspicious sites shouldn't be even listed in any page, IMO. The risk is higher now.

The problem with google is that it hasn't yet developed proper techniques to penalize all websites buying text links for PR. Because of this Matt Cutts blog on Paid Links, I've stopped buying paid links now for my website, but my competitors do and they have highjacked the SERP rankings.

I think now is a good time to start planning a strategy to insure good content. Some ideas:
    1) Add some quality articles and other content to your directory that are original
    2) If you are selling sitewide links, be especially careful that the links are of good quality.
    3) Add some quality links to your existing categories, especially the ones that are one click off the homepage.
    4) Go through and look for some of the worst links and remove them
    5) Take a look at your submit page and make sure you are charging for Review, rather than just charging for links.
    6) Make sure it is clear that your directory is not just about selling links, and that you don't accept any link. That doesn't mean you can't charge for what you do! You just need to charge for you time, not for the link itself.

Thx for bringing the true topic of conversation back to were it belongs ;)

But yes agree that all these will definatly help improve what the web directories
all about and ensure that it stays alive with quality content.

very good post and tips dvduval

I also would like to mention that because a site is about casinos or viagra or
whatever it maybe doesnt mean that you automatically have to reject it...

Every site that is built well and functions properly with good design deserves a link back....
BUT do remember that your directory will start showing up in the serps for those given terms..

It is my opinion that if a site is quality and about viagra or stretches or that stuff that you should submit it in a
directory that caters to that niche and your success rate will be higher .... ex: www.adult-url.com
would probably accept your site if its a quality site and or resource pertaining that field of expertise...

Now the reason i mention this is that someone showed me the site they rejected and it was one of
VERY high quality in my honest opinion and i as an editor shouldn't be biased in my decision of linking to it,
but agree that it was not appropriate and could be damaging to that certain directory if accepted.

    many thx
    malcolm
